Reminder: Neflix Price Hike Takes Effect Next Week
August 23, 2011 06:30 PM

Last month, we reported Netflix would introduce new rates. As we are only about a week away from the September 1st price increases, here is a friendly reminder for those who may want to switch plans.

Customers paying for the Unlimited Streaming plan are safe. Pricing will remain at $7.99 per month for unlimited on-demand content. Those paying for an Unlimited DVD plan are also safe. Having one DVD out at a time is still $7.99 and two DVDs out at a time remains $11.99 as well.

The new pricing changes apply to customers with an Unlimited Streaming + DVD plan:

  • Unlimited Streaming + 1 DVD at a time = $15.98
  • Unlimited Streaming + 2 DVD at a time = $19.98
  • Unlimited Streaming + 3 DVD at a time = $23.28
  • Unlimited Streaming + 4 DVD at a time = $29.98

The original rates were $9.99, $14.99, $19.99, and $27.99 respectively. For customers taking advantage of the most affordable plan which includes physical DVDs and on-demand streaming, the increase is a whopping 60% more. While many customers, including myself, would be willing to entirely switch to the streaming-only plan, there is one major problem: the selection of movies is very limited. New movies are often not available to stream for several months at a time as well.

Anyways, September 1st is just a little over a week away and I those who do not want to pay extra should either cancel their Netflix subscription or simply switch plans. As I stated before, the DVD-only and Streaming-only plans remain the same at the $7.99. Those with a combination of both will unfortunately have to give up the discounts. With that being said, keep in mind that Hulu Plus is still $7.99 for streaming-only content and any form of cable/satellite subscriptions cost significantly more.
