If you didn’t get the perfect Christmas gift or didn’t have a chance to grab the game you wanted, it’s not too late. Steam, the popular gaming service, is having a huge holiday sale. The discounts started a few days before Christmas and will continue through January 2, 2011.

The sale covers over 1000 games, with discounts up to 90 percent. These aren’t necessarily old games, new titles including Batman: Arkham Asylum, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Sid Meier’s Civilization V, and Dragon Age: Origins, are available.

Whether a casual or a hardcore gamer, you are really missing out if you are not using Steam. Valve’s online service is not just a store, the platform lets users connect and play games with friends. For instance, the Friends list feature allows users to see what games friends are playing. If you do not own too many Steam games, the service lets you add “Non-Steam” games to the library. In addition, the platform allow friends to see what you are playing, it also grants the ability to launch games directly from Steam. Every game linked through Steam has a neat overlay feature that lets users chat and browse the web without having to leave a game. A quick keyboard shortcut, Shift + Tab, brings up the overlay instantly.

During the sale, Steam has new deals every day, so keep checking to see if your favorite games are available. In addition to daily deals, video game publishers have arrangements with Steam to offer users larger discounts on bundles. For example, the Bethesda Mega Pack which includes Fallout New Vegas and Oblivion, is discounted 55 percent. And perhaps one of the best deals, Valve’s Complete Package, includes all Valve games for just $49.99.
