I headed down to the Santa Clara Microsoft Store this morning after hearing about the Windows Phone challenge last night. For those not familiar, anyone who completes a task faster than a Windows Phone on their own smart phone can win a $1000 Special Edition Laptop assuming they meet some standard terms and conditions. Those who “get smoked” by a Windows Phone, have the opportunity to trade in their existing device for Windows Phone.
After signing a waiver agreeing to let Microsoft use a photo of me in their advertising, I got in line for the challenge. I was using a Samsung Galaxy Nexus which runs the latest Android operating system on the Verizon Wireless network. As requested, I shut down my phone and powered it on in front of an employee when it was my turn. (I’m assuming they don’t want anyone pre-launching any apps in advance.)
The Microsoft Store employee I was up against then explained the selected challenge. Her exact words were the following: “bring up the weather of two different cities.” The one who could do that first would win. I felt like I struck gold since I knew I already had two weather widgets on my home screen: one for my current location (San Jose, CA) and another for Berkeley, CA.
After a three-second count down, I hit the power button on my phone and said “DONE!” out loud. I had disabled the lock screen entirely, which is a rather awesome out-of-the-box feature of Android that takes you straight to the home screen with a single push of the power button. I didn’t even need to touch the screen, since the two weather widgets were already there.
My opponent finished a split-second later. She had two live tiles on her home screen displaying the weather of two different cities as well. Why does it take longer on Windows Phone? She had to perform two actions. First, she hit the power button to turn on the screen. Second, she had to swipe away the lock screen. That’s pretty much as fast as it gets on that platform. Windows Phone takes two interactions. Android takes just one.
I excitedly thought I won out of pure luck. However, I was quickly told that I lost. I asked for a reason and was told Windows Phone won because “it displays the weather right there.” That was rather unclear. I showed her my device which also was showing off the same information with two side-by-side weather widgets on the center home screen. After pressing for a better reason, I was told that Windows Phone won “just because.”
After trying to push for a real answer since I clearly won the contest by their rules, another Microsoft Store employee (possibly a manager) came by after noticing me asking more questions. Thinking on his feet, he quickly gave a ridiculous out-of-thin-air reason that I need to display the weather of different cities in different states and that “my phone could not do that”.
I calmly and politely tried pointing out that I was absolutely never told about having to show off two different states, but at this point I realized there was no point in even attempting to argue since the Microsoft Store employees clearly had no intention of even potentially discussing the possibility of considering me the winner.
I was then asked to snap a photo in front of a sign that read along the lines of “My Android was smoked by Windows Phone” before leaving the store.
I was quite excited to take the challenge, but left the Microsoft Store in distaste. I sure hope the purpose of this marketing ploy is to attract new customers by demonstrating the highlights of Windows Phone, not frustrating them instead. If anyone from Microsoft would like to have a rematch, I would be happy to smoke a Windows Phone with Android, again.
Update: I Got My Laptop & A Windows Phone. Both Are Up For Auction. 100% Of Proceeds Go To Charity.
The real reason you failed is because you gave a positive in the drug test, which considers ice-cream as a form of narcotic.
Windows phone only smokes pole, both android and iOS are way faster!
damn… I won’t be buying a windows phone after reading this. honestly, what a scam. Thanks for letting us know.
haha the ole bait and switch.
i hope you smiled for the photo?
Microsoft must be desperate to have such an utterly rigged competition in the first place, let alone to be unable to admit it when someone manages to win by some miracle.
Even without the story and how they behaved when someone managed to win, the store people know the challenge in advance & can pre-configure their phones, but the people in line go in blind?
That makes the challenge completely meaningless and utterly pathetic.
It might as well be “Who can display the Windows logo the fastest, OH WE CAN WE WIN YOUR PHONE IS RUBBISH PLEASE LOVE OUR PHONE OH PLEASE WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE US!?”
By all accounts, Windows Phone has a lot going for it. If that is the case then Microsoft should not need to stooping to these depths to get the message out.
SOOOO Microsoft!!! They are SO LAME!!
The samsung Galaxy (the phone the submitter was using) comes with a default widget pre-installed (an un-removable) that displays this weather information. Its part of the OS. So you don’t have to altar your phone (like how you would altar your OS by installing a program?) to achieve this. Displaying weather on a phone isn’t a new or big thing.
If I understand correctly, the ms employee already had set up two city weather tiles since she only unlocked her phone, so the contest was faked from the start.
I do not own a wp7 (nor I would even if it was given to me for free) but how much time does it take to wake you wp7 phone and set up two weather tiles? If it’s faster to use two cities from the same state try that.
Given your story as an example one would assume that all the contests in this campaign are being faked.
This is just plain stupid on their part
Bill Gates didn’t get rich by being fair or playing nice. He’s a cheat and so are his employees by changing the rules so they could win. Typical MS behavior!
Cool! Thanks for the great write up on Microsoft being cocks, You’ve just helped me to determine NOT to buy a phone from them when I finally upgrade from my original Envy.
Not to argue the speed of one over the other, but honestly that is a crap way of bench marking an OS. I would have gone for boot up time and performed a few other tasks in sequence such as web browser launching,e-mail, or running a particular application defined ahead of time of course. Seems the only problem with this challenge for most people would have been that if your phone wasn’t set up for this challenge, meaning that you didn’t already have your weather showing two different locations the challenge would be unfair from the get go.
Man I’d be talking to local radio & tv stations and rustling up some bad publicity, while contacting Microsoft HQ to tell them what I was doing and why. I think you’d soon get rewarded – nobody wants that much bad press and people laughing at them.
I believe this post already deliver bad publicity to windows phone.
So you admit that you went in trying to game the system and you complain that you didn’t win? Ya, that makes sense!
How exactly he “went in trying to game the system”? By disabling his lock screen? Pathetic.
You do realize it is a marketing stunt where people trade in their shit devices for WP, right? It is not a fair competition in the first place, so they can at least pay out to the lucky 1:1000000 winners.
I was going to buy a Microsoft phone but I don’t like this sort of behavior on the part of a multibillion dollar company.
They can afford to not be sore losers. This makes it much more likely that I will migrate to Mac.
Sue!!!
this article makes no scene; the competition seems to aim at measuring which device has faster soft-boot as the 2 tiles / apps were preloaded on both phones!!
That is downright sad!
So let me get this straight. Windows sets up a challenge. You against them. You have no idea what they are going to ask you to do ahead of time. They, on the other hand, not only know what the challenge will be, but are ready ahead of time with the requested item on their homescreen, so that all they have to do, is turn on their phone.
ie, they are cheating, by knowing the question ahead of time, and having the answer ready on the home screen..
Yet, despite this cheating on their part, you still smoke them… and they won’t admit it! Sad, sad, sad.
he didnt use a 3rd party app. its built right into the operating system. He is using a Galaxy Nexus running ICS, the version of android that comes on the phone, and has that feature built in.
I have to agree. You should have won by the terms stated.
From the videos of these contests I’ve seen, the guy would usually state “starting from a lock screen” or something like that. She probably should’ve specified that if she didn’t. If she did then it’s a loss since you weren’t starting from a lock screen.
I just can’t believe that you actually agreed to getting your picture taken and admitting that you got smoked by MS…
it sucks, but like always…giants just love to make new rules as they go.
its like a a big baby that hates losing
You should sue Microsoft, or at least write them a really nasty letter. You could also threaten to write your story in as an op-ed to the wall street journal and ny times. Usually that’s enough to get them to cough up the laptop.
Here are the official rules folks ->
http://content.microsoftstore.com/store/smokedbywindowsphone/rules
Looks like because is good enough reason. Sorry buddy you did not beat them in displaying real time information with live tiles.
Android does not have live tiles. Read the rules. Have a nice day.
