Recently, the HP TouchPad with WiFi only went on sale for just $399.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate. That is down from the original $499.99 price tag. Because of this move, many immediately accused the TouchPad of having poor sales. Though HP has not yet revealed any statistics on the tablet, they are in no way giving up.
The new HP TouchPad 4G went on sale for pre-order on Amazon today, but a 4G chip is not the only new feature the model is receiving. In addition to faster data speeds, users can expect performance improvements throughout the device with its new dual-core 1.5GHz processor. The current TouchPad has a dual-core 1.2GHz processor. It is by no means a huge upgrade, but it can certainly help out with the slowness quite a few reviewers complained about.
It is odd though that the TouchPad suffers from sluggish performance. Even the previous dual-core 1.2GHz processor is still one of the fastest in a tablet today. Just because it is such a popular device, I can not help but make a comparison with the iPad 2. It only has a dual-core 1GHz processor, yet critics praised the tablet countless times for its speed. This really means that webOS 3.0, the TouchPad’s operating system, needs further optimization for the hardware.
All the performance boosts could pose a small problem for battery life, however. 4G is known to drain batteries faster than the launch of the last spacecraft out of Earth’s orbit. Plus, a faster processor will not help the situation. And battery life was sub-par to begin with.
On the flip side, the HP TouchPad 4G packs in 32GB of storage, a total of 3GHz of processing power, and of course those fourth-generation wireless speeds for just $699.99 — a fantastic price point, especially when considering the competition. The TouchPad 4G is available for pre-order on Amazon now and is exclusive to AT&T. HP has yet to announce a release date.
