Tired of the stock Safari iPad browser? You are in luck. The Dolphin Browser HD is finally available in a tablet-optimized layout for the Apple iPad beginning today to complement the existing iPhone iteration. MoboTap, the company behind this app, already has offerings for Android smart phones and tablets too. (The Android tablet app is still in beta.)
Those familiar with the Dolphin Browser will definitely enjoy features such as gestures to quickly get to websites. For instance, sketching a letter ‘T’ will bring up Twitter. A new Webzine quickly converts websites into a unique magazine layout much like Flipboard.
Other standard features include the speed dial for accessing favorite websites. Dolphin Browser HD also comes with a tabbed browsing interface for switching between websites in a single click which is a neat touch since the default iPad web browser currently lacks the feature. I should note that Apple plans to introduce tabbed browsing when iOS 5 makes a debut in approximately a week or so.
The Dolphin Browser is not the only alternative either. Mozilla offers Firefox for Android and iOS devices. Opera has its own set of mobile solutions for both operating systems too. Despite the competition, MoboTab managed to raise a $10 million Series A funding led by Sequoia Capital earlier this year. The app even made it to the #1 spot in the iPhone Free Productivity Apps section.
The newly announced Dolphin Browser for the iPad which we got our hands on at TechCrunch Disrupt earlier today does come with some limitations. Specifically, it does not have support for add-ons just yet which allows users to customize their browsing experience. Despite that, the app still has plenty of unique features to set itself apart. The iPad app is now available in the App Store.
