Most modern vending machines have little computers inside. A tiny screen usually displays some information. Although relatively little known, pressing a certain combinations of buttons can control the settings. For instance, you can check the internal temperature, view the amount of money inside, empty change, or dump certain beverages. It will generally only work on new machines which is pictured on the right side.
Accessing the menu
Press the buttons [4] [2] [3] [1] one after another. These can be arranged vertically or horizontally depending on the layout of the buttons. If one does not work, try the other. Once you key that combination into the machine, you will enter the “code debug menu.” It should display the word “ERROR” on the screen.
Navigating the system
Once inside the buttons become controls for navigating the menu system.
- Button [1] – Back/Exit
- Button [2] – Down
- Button [3] – Up
- Button [4] – Select
You should now be able to scroll through the available settings.
Understanding the settings
Here are the descriptions of some of the settings you may run into:
- Cash – the amount of money inside the machine and how much each drink made.
- Sale – shows how many drinks were sold and from which slots.
- Ver – the version number of the machine’s firmware.
- Error – there are various error codes:
- ColJ – column jammed
- VEnd – vending mechanism
- Door – door switch
- Sels – selection switch
- Char – charge error
- Acce – acceptor errors
- Sts – space to sales.
- bVal – bill validators
- Rtn – exits back to normal menus.
Pressing the coin return or back button also exits out of the setting menus. Quick Tip: holding a coin at the tip of the slot will display the current temperature inside.
Other notes
Although access to those settings is usually enabled, it is sometimes locked down by the owner or maintenance. If you can get into the menus, here are a few things you can do:
- CPO – Coin payment mode dumps coins out of the machine. You can even specific the type of coins (e.g. quarter, dime, penny) and the amount you wanted.
- tvFL – Tube fill mode lets you replenish the machine with coins.
- PASS – Change the default password from 4231 to something new.
- PrlC – Change the price of a drink! (One cent anyone?)
- StOS – Reorder what each button refers to. (Make Coke button drop a Sprite)
- COn – Deeper machine configuration settings.
- TIME – Change the time value.
- LANG – Switch the language to something else.

great idea! luv it!
but im either missing something or u never explain how u would get an actual soda after u break into the machine…..plez call me a dimwit or explain it 2 me!
Default password is still the same on most coke machines. On some machines, this default password is reversed.
The only way to get free soda this way would be if someone set all the menu options to be accessible from the outside panel. Typically the ‘Vend’ option, as well as any that might drop cash are deactivated for the outside panel.
Hack still works on many machines, but the options are useless without access to inside panel.
well if you change the price of a soda to 1 cent, it’s basically free. though after reading i didn’t find anything about getting one that is absolutely free.
easy just tell the machine to give you money and then put it back in the machine
I wrote this article in 2005. It’s been 4 years. Asides from the fact I was a horrible writer back then, I doubt this hack still works. Most machine vendors were patching up machines when this hit the internet. And keeping in mind that this is probably illegal, unless you find a old machine that still does this, you probably should just shell out a buck or two for your drink! :)
yes but this hack doesnt get you anything, its just a browse threw the menue
Really now?
CPO – Coin payment mode dumps coins out of the machine. You can even specific the type of coins (e.g. quarter, dime, penny) and the amount you wanted.
PrlC – Change the price of a drink! (One cent anyone?)
so I guess getting money and changing the price to anything is getting nothing these days. noob.
Only noobs reply to such old posts.
also, most machines wont let you do those options from the outside panel. So “its just a browse threw the menue”

/me stirs up more $#|+
hate to break it to all of you, but your reading this. by defintion you got no life. 1.50 for a soda to much really? i stumpledupon this by accident. you guys got serious lols.
@Cole – Irony!
This bit of knowledge may be useful in the days during the revolution just before the NWO declares martial law and food and water begin to get rationed out. An urban survival technique….yeah…
hahahahah yeah because when food and water rations are low we’ll still be using vending machines
The only vending machine hack I’ll be using then will be a baseball bat.
Let me know how that goes for you. haha
What a moron!
hmmm 50 dollars woth of quarters would be nice
Omega, i’m pretty sure if the world all goes to hell, and we don’t have enough to drink, I am not going to let a single sheet of glass keep me from delcious sugary joy.
1. Dump The Coins
2. Take The Amount Needed For A Drink.
3. Use the “tvFL- tube fill mode, which lets you fill the machine w/ coins” thing and put all you don’t need back…
4. Buy Drink.
5. EXIT and walk away don’t forget to exit.
knob, why not dump the coins and keep them all??? Get a drink maybe, but keep the rest! If you bothered to put them back in, you’d take longer and you would have a much higher risk of getting caught…
‘Cause it reads funnier that way, ass hat.
Actually, you guys want to steal pop and/or get a ton of change back. I think what I’m going to do at school tomorrow…. I’m going to really max up the price on the Coke machine and really throw the students for a loop. Listen, guys… the school I go to has a bunch of people that probably couldn’t even tell you what their school account password is, but they probably COULD tell you the exact difference between flavors of Camel, Marlboro, etc. So they wouldn’t take the calm, passive, “I’ll fix it” route of a geek… they would FREAK! And it would be dead funny.
2010 and still working fine
Hooray for updated news!
Which types of soda machines does this work on? I can’t see the picture very well.
Good Article, bookmarking it now. I am not sure of success but sure worth a try! There are some good hacks on htttp://indiawebsearch.com too, do have a look
Aint I desperate to get a coke now!!! Now leave me oh ever so addicting facebook!
Old school hack; Crow bar
Half-life hack if anything.
If you pull the plug out, then plug it back in again, the drink/candy falls right down.
Man this is old, none of the machines are vunrable for this trick anymore (here at least).
Says you, mate. I just used this on the vending machine at my University, works just fine.
Surprised, it must be a pretty old machine. I hope you didn’t steal anything. I feel like I should rewrite this article at some point.
nows the time
Who cares about stealing? i’ve gotten away with worse, and its a cool trick.
I guess i’m a doob now, Ayy?
I can’t believe they still make machines which can be so easily manipulated, a simple universal key to use while controlling the settings would solve all of this…. some folks just don’t think things through, do they….
Some people have found out new ways to get through these soda machines
Weak, even for Stumbleupon. No, actually. Standard issue
Hey is this still working???
Every vending machine is different. This might work on some but most aren’t hackable.
just tried this at work today it worked! the code was button 4 button 2 button 3 button 1! so try some different ones out! they arent difficult!
Fantastic, showing people how to be a thief.
Waz wrong with thiefs????
Its exiting…
Worked today in my break room at work. Couldn’t get into those advanced options though. I could only check CASH, SALE, and there was an option for RETURN that I couldn’t do anything with. Btw, this was a Dasani machine (Which is owned by the Coca-Cola company) with the conveyer belt and whatnot.
omg…this actually works. cool!
