And due to popular demand, today I present the first HTC EVO 4G vs. Apple iPhone 4 vs. Motorola Droid X Infographic. Does it even need an explanation? These three devices are the most powerful smart phones on the market, period. AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon couldn’t have asked for more; the iPhone 4, EVO 4G, and Droid X, respectively, are the best each has to offer.

Evo 4g all the way. From the look of this chart I would say the Evo 4g looks superior to the competition. The only problem I have with the Evo is I feel the screen resolution could be better. Relative to screen size, my sprint hero has a better resolution compared to my mom’s new Evo.
Based on published specs of: 3.2″, 320×480 for Hero; 4.3″, 480×800 for Evo; and the dpi calculator at http://members.ping.de/~sven/dpi.html
Hero: Display size: 1.78″ × 2.66″ (4.51cm × 6.76cm) = 180.28 PPI, 0.1409mm dot pitch, 32500 PPI²
Evo: Display size: 2.21″ × 3.69″ (5.62cm × 9.37cm) = 216.97 PPI, 0.1171mm dot pitch, 47074 PPI²
I would still like it if the Evo had a higher resolution screen… but it’s miles ahead of the Hero and its HVGA. It’s ~175% of the screen area, and still ~120% of the pixel density.
Great infographic, btw. Elegant and comprehensive. (Though the one sticking point on all of them for me isn’t mentioned — cost of service. Were it not for the $10/mo extra and minimum plan requirement, I’d already have an Evo.)
makkonen…10 bucks a month is seriously nothing…plus, sprint has basically the lowest plans out there considering the plans that they offer. I have a family plan of 4 lines ALL unlimited except the 1500 shared mins… for only about $129 – $140/mo ( thats about $30 – $40 per line)… plus free nights start 7pm and free weekends – so you wont even really use the 1500 mins in one month…believe me you’ll be saving more money and thinking 10 bucks is a lot – then i suggest you rethink that logic b/c you dont know what your missing out.
I agree. $10 is nothing. But I’m on a grandfathered SERO plan and pay $30/mo. 2.5 to 3 times my current bill… well, that is something. I know I’m just spoiled.
If I had the wherewithal, I’d try to get my whole family onto one family plan… but I got them on SERO, too, and I don’t think I’ll convince them to pay more so I can get an EVO. :-) (Plus I don’t want the hassle of having to collect funds every month. Again, I’m spoiled.)

I have owned 2 generations of iPhones and an AT&T customer for over 5 years. I have switched to the new Sprint HTC Evo 4g and LOVE it!!!!
The large screen is awesome, the tethering feature is amazing and fast. I love iPhone but AT&T network sucks. Period. They are now limiting bandwidth to 200mb a month just when new ipads and iPhones come out. That sucks!!!!
I love 4g and my new EVO. I will never go back. And i can play flash too!!!! Hhahaha

Correct me if I am wrong but isn’t the Droid considered a smartphone on the Verizon network, thus making it $29 a mo. for the data plan. I think 10$ sounds much better… I wonder why the data plan with Verizon is so much more expensive???

Sure the iPh a higher screen resolution than the EVO, which allows it to view most web sites without scaling (unlike the EVO),

yes the iPh does have more quality apps than Android’s market place (full of crap, malware ridden, free apps),
and yes the iPh’s touch screen is more touch sensitive and reads finger input superior to any phone,
and yes the iPh’s battery does last much longer on a charge than the EVOs,

But perhaps, like ‘big things’ like the EVO over quality, you wouldn’t understand or appreciate the fact that the iPh’s camera, firmware, and software actually create better photos and video than the EVOs.
Or that the iPh was worked on by over 1000 software, hardware, and field test engineers to get it perfected in terms of user experience compared to the EVO, which was mashed together in months by Google and it’s hardware partner, much the same as Dell installing Windows on any piece of hardware that has ‘all the stats’ in terms of functionality, but performs like a dog.
And that’s the EVO – an obese phone, with low screen resolution, low batter life, and poor touch responsiveness.

Yes Mike, the iPhone is better. That is, unless you plan on making phone calls while HOLDING THE PHONE IN YOUR HAND. In which case you’re out of luck.
The biggest thing the Iphone still lacks is multi-tasking. Evidently Mike has not figured out that “session-saving” is not true multi-tasking..but most Apple geeks seems to ignore little facts like that. The Evo is not perfect, but its step in the right direction. Apple continues to refuse to support Flash (oh yes…we have all heard the “Flash is not the future” rant),but most web users would beg to differ. But most Apple users are just followers..why else would anyone buy something from an app store that censors apps and determines what you should and should not use.
Actually I’m not a Evo PR Troll. I’m simply a happy owner of the HTC Evo 4G & I make my thoughts known. I honestly love my Evo & I think it’s better & a lot more for the money then the Iphone 4. You yourself though are just an apple enthusiast who can’t admit that the Evo can actually compare fairly if not better to the Iphone 4. As a non-techsavy individual like 1/2 of Americans, I say it as I see it & I see that the Evo can actually physically offer me. THE EVO IS BETTER. PERIOD.

and its funny because I already have heard people complaining about it at work today. I work at starbucks and since we have at&t wifi connection…we had a whole bunch of iphone users come by JUST to use the wifi connection TO TRY out their new front face video chatting…that just proves how limited iphone video chat is as opposed to the video chat on EVO which is available on 3g/4g/AND WIFI…anywhere at anytime. Plus, while they were there trying to make phone calls b/c they keep losing reception and the link i provided just showed why!
So much for your “worked on by over 1000 software, hardware, and field test engineers to get it perfected” speech…b/c it clearly shows that Apples 1000 software, hardware, and field test engineers or even its designers failed to avoid that problem or let alone fix it. Now iphone 4 users either have to buy a case for it or fix their hand placement :P.

ARE YOU REALLY THAT BLIND! Apple already said that you can’t make video calling without 2 different iphone 4’s & both having WiFi. Also AT&T still has to come out with 4G, even though 4G for Sprint is still small it’s still growing at a faster rate then AT&Ts non-exsistant 4G network. Also the removable battery & the 8MP camera. 1)Restricted access, if Steve “Hitler, Castro, “ doesn’t want you to see it you won’t, so is it a Commy phone?
2)How much does it cost to replace a battery and how long does it take? Bet it’s not $20 like on the open market and who can afford to be without their phone for any amount of time?
3)I carry a Duracell USB/USB mini cord that will shoot 5 hours into my phone, recharges my mp3 (not apple product either, San Disk) player 5 full charges, runs my car GPS when needed, recharges my wireless headphones, my 7” tablet, my wife’s digital camera and on and on.
4)No way to expand memory, just think how you are going to fell when next year phones are going to have 128gb memory and 2gb or more on processors and you are still using that already out of date Apple with the worm bitten out of it.
5)Why didn’t Apple put in a hot shot for the rest of the family?
6)No FM is not huge, but still makes you get out your MP3, that is unlessit’s not an older Apple product, then you still won’t have it.
7)No Dedicated keys, wow, how cheap is that or would they get in the way of the bad antenna band?

13)Retina screen, right, Samsung had sold out their Super AMOLED screens and Apple had no chose but to scramble around for something else. BTW have you seen I phone 4 and Epic side by side, they have to turn the Samsung down to ½ brightness to film the dogfight against that tiny little I Phone display.
14)What are I phones contributing to the world in hardware, they run supplier’s parts, a Samsung processor and so on. Apple products have always been overpriced and under featured and I don’t see that changing while Jobs is at the helm. Just don’t like being lied too and treated like an idiot even if I might be one. But let’s try for you:
1. iPh 4 – higher screen resolution than EVO;
2. iPh 4 – most responsive mobile touch screen as shown scientifically;
3. iPh 4 – longer battery life than EVO;
4. iPh 4 – has app store with better quality and quantity of apps;
5. iPh 4 – has app store with code secure certified apps (unlike Android’s).
The list of superior features for the iPh4 could continue. I’m only up to 5, but I wouldn’t be so arrogant to write that the iPh4 is ‘5 times the phone Evo is’.
There’s a reason the WWW (the ‘Web’_ was invented on a computer made by Steve Jobs company, NeXT, and that NeXT Mach OS was bought by Apple and became the foundation of OS X – because Jobs puts ‘everything’ in terms of quality into his products.
And he’s doing the same for iOS, which is based on OS X.
Whereas, Android was rushed to market with a very poor UI, slow VM model, and little concern for quality, security, or privacy of its users. Google doesn’t care – they just want your search/ad click revenue, which is one reason they give away the OS, and obviously the other was to beat WinMo when it was used by more phone manufacturers. Now they are trying to catch up to to the iPh by letting their hardware partners make any stupidly large phone like the EVO with ‘large specs’ but poor usability to look more impressive.
The EVO is for Hummer lovers. Android is the new crappy Windows for phones.
Once you’ve used OS X and a Mac, you’ll understand why no iPh user cares if they have to wait a year for one or two new hardware features, because they know those features will work better on the iPh, because Apple puts more resources into its one phone than Google and all its hardware partners put into all their attempts to beat the iPh.

Hotspot one for iphone not true…. i can connect multiple machines to my iphone 3gs running ios4 already. I tried it out and it works great. So no difference there between all three… limit i dnt know hvnt tried it out yet.
Hotspot feature is not available in the United States on iPhone due to AT&T restrictions. It is available for iPhone in other countries. This is clearly a U.S. centric chart – the Spring Evo 4G is available in the U.S. only, so it is a fair comparison – if limited.
iPhone 4 does not support flash.
With MyWi on a jailbroken iPhone 3G, I once had at least 20 others using my hotspot. Ever since then, I’ve set a password to prevent that.
Umm… dang. I thought I really wanted the iPhone 4, but based on the reviews here, it looks like I’ll go with the EVO instead! APPLE YOU DISAPPOINT ME EVERY DAY: YOU HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY AND THE WISDOM YET YOU FAIL TO USE IT. Now if only I can figure out how to use my EVO effectively on my Mac (the biggest reason I stopped using WM devices)…

Apple’s hard work goes into making the iPhone’s tech seamless – so easy to use it doesn’t have to look like it has the BIG spec’s – but it has the best quality hardware, performance, and overall user experience.
Yet Apple gives its users the highest phone screen resolution, the longest battery life, excellent pictures from camera/firmware/software optimisation, the most responsive touch screen on the market (scientifically proven), etc.
And it happens to have the best apps store in terms of quality and quantity, and most secure app – EVERY app is code checked by Apple. No one checks the code in Google’s Android market place, which is why it has been found to have fake banking apps to phish user passwords, etc.
Being a Mac user, you should know the benefits of using Apple products – they protect your privacy, guarantee quality of user experience, and happen to have fast, robust, and great looking products.
But you probably aren’t a Mac user based on your comment, but are a paid PR troll.

No we want Evo because we can make Video Calling without WiFi, & our 8MP camera can actually make very good pictures even in low lighting. We have a faster 3G network in certain places then AT&T’s though they claim to have “America’s fastest 3G network” & We want the Evo because it’s actually called AMERICA’S FIRST 4G PHONE! Iphone 4 & AT&T can’t even claim that.

You got that right. Slow, complicated in comparison to evo, everyone sez how evo doesnt perform ours does. Iph4 in family also, nothing bad to say as a ph go’s, it has alot of frills in operation that make it difficult, where as the evo is straight forward and easy to get around and gets around fast.
Iph4 has kickstand, stand you corrected with that one.
It’s all about apps and once again iPhone is by far superior, so enjoy talking on the other phones, boring.
225,000 but 200,000 of those apps are probably extremely useless or cost $100. Google’s app market is growing at a fast speed & will probably be 100,000+ USEFUL apps strong in no time. I have great apps on my Evo some identical or better than those on the iphone market. Also what’s the use of America’s fastest 3G network when it SUCKS in the area that you need…. I have the Evo & it’s EVO ALL THE WAY! What this side by side comparison doesn’t tell you is that the Iphone 4 cannot make 3G/4G video calling & that you & your contact need to both have Iphone 4’s and WiFi to use their video calling features. NOT WITH MY EVO! :] also the 8MP camera on the back is amazing, great resolution even in low lighting. Screen resolution could’ve been better no doubt BUT honestly with “Gods phone” in my hands why complain? I love it, for its large size, great price, awesome features & the fact that its by far the BEST PHONE OUT THERE AT THIS TIME!

I also don’t agree that price necessary indicates quality, but he’s right if you look at out-of-contract prices. The iPhone 4 is $600 for 16GB or $700 for 32GB, and the EVO is $550. Droid X full price is unknown.
Our Iph4 was free, so was our evo.
Did we miss anything in our infographic? Yes. Missing the “Kickstand” comparison there.
It’s a good thing you are missing it – because most users don’t care for it and don’t want a phone so big that it’s like digital picture frame and needs a stand.
And it makes no difference to the fact that the iPh4 has a superior screen resolution, battery life, touch screen responsiveness, app store, etc.

I’m a long time coder, but I like Apple gadgets because their operating systems are often the smartest, most robust, and are a pleasure to use. It’s easy to tweak them if I want to play around, enable one or two features that won’t be released until the next version by Apple, but I never feel I have to as they’ve put so many design/engineering/testing hours into making such a smooth products.
I love Macs because OS X is a developer dream work environment, and its just beautiful to use for video etc (my iMac has a 2560×1440 resolution), which is much bigger than HD, and now my iPh4 has a resolution that will show most web sites without scaling, and with no lag. The EVO and Android phones are just toys for bored wannabe geek ‘tinkerers’ not power users who want devices that work and help them get the job done in less time.
A real world working comparison will show the iPh is faster, lasts longer on a charge, has more responsive touch screen…etc compared to any Android phone. Android is the new crappy Windows for mobile. It’ll always be a second rate OS and devices for the masses.

I got an EVO on the launch day. My wife and kids use the phone more than I do. My wife signed up at Sprint store waiting list for EVO last Wednesday, got it 1 week later. She had a Palm Centro, as I did before. We cannot say how much we love it. Have not done video conference yet. Will most likely do that when I am out of town.
I have never been an Apple fan. To each his own and let the market decide the winner. EVO has everything I need (crave,lust), camera, music, contacts, calendar, task list, memo, free develpment tools. I have not found an app I need to buy that I could not find for free with great quality. Does apple have 200,000 apps of crap? Evo, who could want anthing more?

Android’s market place is widely regarded to have inferior crap apps – because developers have no incentive to make good ones for it – because it’s factually recorded in surveys that Android owners prefer free applications. So there’s no incentive for developers to make good apps for Android as they won’t get paid for it.
The EVO is for obese people with big hands, who want to look like geeks because they can tinker a little more with their phone – like a Linux noob who uses Ubuntu but someday will learn enough to understand why real developers use Apple’s OS X. For the same reason real geeks love iOS – it’s the most robust OS, is the fastest, and has all the apps you need, and if you really want to hack something – just jailbreak it.
The EVO is the Hummer of phones – impractical, inefficient, and obese.
And it doesn’t even have a usable resolution!
The iPh4 has a resolution that is designed to allow most 1024×768 web sites (which are standardised around 960×650) to be viewed without scaling, whereas the EVO has a bigger screen and a smaller resolution, which causes the user to have to scale to a standard sized web site. How stupid!
The biggest difference however, is the quality that goes into Apple’s products, and the care they take to make sure the user experience is top notch.
This is why Apple code checks apps going into its store – like a street retailer selling standards certified products. Google, out of desperation to catch up to Apple’s app number – lets anything in, including fake banking apps designed to phish user passwords… and a lot of dangerous malware. Don’t believe me – ‘Google it’.
Just wait until your wife phones you one day and says, ‘Honey have you changed the password on our bank account?’ Only for you download the same app as her to discover its a fake banking app and the developer has stolen and changed your banking password.
You can get Xcode and the development tools for iOS for free – so don’t like about that. The camera quality on the iPh easily rivals if not beats the EVOs – google the number of camera pro’s independently testifying this.

I tried using FM on my dad’s android, the quality is very very poor, it’s impossible to listen to the radio on it at all, constant statics, so I don’t see a point in having one, if you can’t even use it.

The EVOs radio sucks! Any $15 radio will beat it hands down for reception quality. It’s how EVO is engineered! It was obviously rushed.
I’ve tried using EVO’s radio in 3 states and its a pointless gimmick.
I wish I hadn’t bothered with it and bought the iPh. Pandora on my mates iPh4 is amazing!!

Got the evo and its hands down the best phone ever! Apple in my mind is a big fad. Google, HTC, and Sprint got this phone right. And for $79.00 a month for unlimited you can’t beat that. Old Stevo at Apple is money hungry.

THE EVO 4 G is so far ahead of the iphone it’s amazing! While iphone users still have to type to text, EVO users can talk to the phone and it will type for you! It’s amazing technology and it’s not an ‘app’ it’s built into the keyboard. And if it were on an iphone, they would have told you about…LOL
So, if you use your phone for talking, texting, emailing…the EVO DESTROYS the iphone with this feature alone! So, if you choose the iphone, don’t get mad when your fumbling around the keyboard…I’ve got an EVO and I’m talking and it’s typing…EVO ROCKS!
Not to mention, TURN-BY-TURN navigation it’s on EVO and Sprint and has been for yours. This means that you don’t have to look at a map…the phone tells you where to turn…there is an app for the iphone, but it’s $100 more…LOL

I’m going to chime in here.
The iPhone isn’t designed to compete with Android on the *number* of features. Rather, it’s designed to stay competitive by offering a better and more consistent user experience with the things it does offer.
Look at how you create folders in each OS.
iPhone/iOS:
Step 1: Long-press an icon to make it movable.
Step 2: Drag it on top of another icon. That creates a folder, and the folder is intelligently named for you based on the apps inside it (though you can also rename it yourself)
Android:
Step 1: Long-press an empty spot on a homescreen, or tap menu and then tap “add”.
Step 2: Select “folders” from list
Step 3: Select “new folder”
Step 4: You now have a folder named “folder.”
Step 5: You probably want to rename it to something useful now. Open the folder, and long-press the title bar of the window until a text entry form pops up.
I personally prefer iPhone because while Android can do more stuff, when you compare a feature that both phones do, the iPhone way is almost always faster IMO. I wish my iPhone had all the features of Android, and I’ve even temporarily switched to Android in the past because of that, but ultimately it isn’t about just quantity.
Cogent analysis. I agree, the iPhone does have a more elegant user interface, and for the average person is easier/more intuitive to use. I would recommend an iPhone over an Evo for my mother, or for anyone who is not of the mindset to tweak and customize (this is not a value judgment on either side). I happen to be the type that is more interested in tweaking.
The other difference that swings me toward the Android side is philosophical. Apple makes jailbreaking illegal (!); Google turns a blind eye to rooting, as far as I’ve seen. Apple locks you in to the iTunes ecosystem (I HATE iTunes); Google lets competitors fight it out and/or coexist. Apple has fostered a strong, vibrant market for paid apps (avoiding the issues of app approval and censorship). Android has, by intention or by serendipity, drawn more of the hacker community, and a more vibrant environment for free and open source development. (That’s just my opinion, and I haven’t looked too closely at development for jailbroken iPhones.)
Google’s creepy data-mining and their own lock-in gives me pause, but it’s not yet as offensive to me as some of Apple’s moves.

@T, there’s an app for jailbroken iPhones that does turn-by-turn navigation. It’s free and works well. I ride a motorcycle and turn-by-turn nav is essential.
no one has anything to say in regards to the droid x which makes it hard to choose but i wont be getting an iphone 4 there new data packages are way to expensive and at&t has a lot of drops calls for me

I am currently waiting for the Evo phone to come off back order. I did however have a look at the iphone and now Im having a hard time deciding……….
I hate people who say AT&T has a crappy network.
IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR LOCATION. It is not inferior to the other three networks. They all experience dropped calls and places where they aren’t as good. Sprint SUCKS in Houston, but it works just fine in Dallas.
I’ve had AT&T for 5 years and have had no major problem with it.
