Earlier this year, Skatter Tech brought you the massive EVO 4G vs. iPhone 4 vs. Droid X infographic. While only a few months have passed, both Sprint and Verizon have introduced the Samsung Epic 4G and the Motorola Droid 2, respectively. While the Android market share has overtaken Apple’s iPhone share, no single Android device has sold nearly as many units as the iPhone 4. Although we didn’t have enough time to throw the HTC EVO 4G and the Motorola Droid X into this lineup as well, if you folks want to see another infographic, feel free to let us know.
(Click to enlarge infographic. Feel free to blog or share with friends, but please credit our hard work.)
What are your thoughts on these devices? Which one will you buy? Did we miss anything in our infographic? Corrections, errors, or suggestions? Let us know in the comments!
Our in-depth reviews of the Epic 4G and Droid 2 are on their way. Feel free to read our EVO 4G and Droid X reviews in the meantime. If you want to stay updated, we offer RSS Feeds and daily Email Subscriptions. And of course, you can find us on Facebook and Twitter as well.

Update 8/16/2010 12:23 PM: Infographic has been updated to add Talk Time for Epic 4G and fix the FM Radio error for the Droid 2. Update 8/18/2010 1:46 PM: Infographic has been modified again to fix the error for FM Radio category for the Epic 4G. We are still awaiting confirmation on Standby Time.
I have a Droid 2. As far as I can tell there’s no FM radio (hope I’m wrong). Where are you infographic people getting the info? Nothing on Motorola’s specs page or Verizon’s features page indicates there’s FM on the Droid 2. On the plus side, battery life is phenomenal for a smartphone.
yeah i’m on with you. this entire thing is BS. there is no radio. this is BS comparision anyways. iPhone 4 is better they don’t compare it right
no word of iphone noise canceling, it has more pixels per inch, navi, hotspot, etc. panoramic in it too
Thank you for catching that. The Epic 4G is the only one with FM radio. I just made a careless mistake. The corrected chart will be up shortly.
The Epic has a gyroscope.
FYI, The Epic has a Gyro built in.
wat about the HTC EVO 4G? it deserves to be tested because it is the first to have 4G and it looks way better than the epic.
Thanks so much for this, I am buying the Epic 4G hands down. I can’t see why anyone would possibly get either of the other two.
love you guys!
thanks you and best idea!
Iphone 4 has the best styling and overall best UI with the most apps and the best camera. AT&T has been great for me. Don’t need HDMI or flash. FM radio..well that’s an iPhone App. Hotspot..well that’s an iPhone App (jailbroken). And come on…a physical keyboard, that’s so 2000-and-late. I’m just sayin’. MHO!
You are in denial with your iPhone. It used to be the top dog, now 3rd or 4th, and sinking fast.In a year when they launch a new one…, it will be so outdated that you might wake up then from your iPhone dream. Good luck in 3G dial up dude!!
Sorry Dude, I got my new Epic yesterday and my doctor has an Ip4 and he said, dang, should have waited for the Epic. The little Ip4 did look cute sitting next to all that dazzling real estate of the Epic. It’s great the way Apple lets you invest less in a phone than in the life time of buying apps afterward. Good news though, in about a year Apple is going to have a 4G called Ip5. They did have their 15 minutes of fame. Wow, did you read the German Consumer Reports on the Ip4. Ouch! I have to wear gloves to keep from burning my fingers on the Epic Screen with that 4G smoking by. You better get that IP4 on Ebay before it gets too crowded.
In response to Jag on the the flash for his IP4. You may be sorry to hear that Mr. Jobs has seen the light and invited Adobe back to work with Apple. Now as far as the virtual keyboard being the keyboard of the 21 century, you may need a new perspective. I love the huge Epic physical keyboard, my thumbs are 1 1/2″ wide, my index fingers are 1 1/4″ wide and on a 3 1/2″ virtual ip4 keyboard, it is impossible to type. I had same size hands in the 90’s also. So the keyboard on the Epic is such shaped and spread that I can type on it with my index fingers and maybe my thumbs if practiced. I could use a virtual keyboard if I had my 11 year old granddaughters’ little dainty hands. So since if when I lay two fingers across the ip4 screen and it disappears, it is worthless.
Free Tip for my fellow Epic-Sters
I know this is coming from far left field but what the hey? I got new Epic like I lucked out and got day before release (ur, eh, I mean the day of release) and the first thing I did was stick a case on it. I am active and so me not having a phone case is like a a car not having a steering wheel. I just happened to have a RoadMaster VR4 backup camera monitor mounted on my dash. The sun toasted the outside camera so the monitor was of no use and I had removed it and left the cradle for it. It so happens that the cradle holds the Epic like perfect and the standard charging cable that comes with the phone (USB) on the power feed end cleared the cradle and I had an instant Epic GPS holder. I didn’t go look for the cradle just now but you can search for it and it is probably only $10 bucks or so. So for about $10 and your Epic and cord and a cigar adapter to USB from the Dollar Tree ($1) total of $11, you have a mobile docking station with power and holder for your Epic or probably most any super phone. Hope this helps. Good Day
I’m getting the epic 4G who would even get iphone after reading this
i am with you buddy!!
Evo has an 8 megapixel camera, not a 5 megapixel.
I don’t believe there is an EVO in this infographic. ;)
I think EPIC is the best. I thought Epic featured gyroscope. whatever the case,I am titled towards Samsung Epic.
Epic 4G has Six-Axis. Those are just six directional accelerometers. I don’t believe that is the equivalent of a gyroscope, but please correct me if I’m wrong.
I would think 6 Axises (sp?) would be 3 directions x, y, z and 3 rotations yaw, pitch, and roll. Not sure what a gyroscope would add to that. Precession, maybe? If it’s an actual hardware gyro.
The other galaxies (not international version) have a 3 axis accelerometer plus a 3 axis gyroscope.
Actually i just looked it up and it does have a gyroscope.
Epic 4G is clearly the hands-down winner. Add in the physical kb (adds less than 2mm thickness), DLNA wireless media sharing, 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 (yes THREE.0) and the industries best rated display technology – Super AMOLED in a massive 4″ screen size, and you’ve got a killer device.
Verizon and AT&T better look in the rearview mirror, there is a yellow formula 1 rocket coming at them. I cannot wait to see their smoke screens when it comes to their limited spectrum and metered data!! Oh, and slower traffic where their little 4G pipes fill up with data traffic.
Is there any literature elsewhere about the Epic 4G having FM radio support? I’m curious about that because the other two Galaxy S variants that have been released in the US (Captivate and Vibrant) have no FM tuner support. Has anyone seen any reviews where they mention FM support on the Epic?
That was an error on our part. One of our fact sheets were incorrect. We are updating the infographic (again) to reflect that the Epic 4G doesn’t have an FM Radio.
The Epic will be able to do Micro USB to HDMI, via a cable Samsung is making for the Galaxy S series:
http://briefmobile.com/galaxy-s-does-microusb-to-hdmi
Couple this with the soon to be released 2.2 OS and GPS fix, this should make the Epic even more “Epic.”
So you can update your chart to show it will have HDMI capability soon.
If that chart gets you jiggered, check out this Epic video from Sprint showing most of the features and what appears to be a good as it gets screen. The reason (I deduced) for IP4 screen not being a Samsung is that Samsung didn’t have enough to supply for Apple and HTC. I read that Samsung broke ground on a 2.1 Billion dollar plant to produce Super Amoled screens. I also read that IP4 is running a Samsung processor? I also read that Samsung and Sony are partners in a new screen technology to tide the demand for screens until the new plant is operational. The chart did not mention the DLNA, meaning one of many things. I can sit on the couch, watch 3D on the Samsung Plasma and receive a text from the phone on the TV screen. Important why? Because we live in remote signal area and we have to leave our cells in the window and use a repeater to in house phones. So we can not see a text with going to a different room while watching TV. Yes, we have lots of Samsung products.
Oops, forgot to give you the link to the Epic video. 18 minutes but informative http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/41325
Epic also has video-out through the headphone jack (same as iPhone I believe). This output mirrors the screen display.
And, I’d assume like all other Galaxy S devices, supports HDMI from it’s USB port with the use of a USB->HDMI cable.
A few corrections:
As mentioned before Epic 4G does have a gyroscope:
http://briefmobile.com/samsung-galaxy-s-guide
If I remember correctly STM L3G4200D which is in the iphone 4 is in all Galaxy S phones..aka they are the same!
Now as for HDMI, Epic 4g should be listed as having it as well…this is done via the mciroUSB->HDMI wire…now if the argument is that it doesn’t physically have the port…neither does any other device…you can’t take an HDMI wire and plug it in to say an EVO or a Droid X…you need to buy a MiniHDMI->HDMI wire..so in the end there is no diffirence..you end up buying a new wire either way…so as long as the port can output HDMI signal it should be considered an HDMI.
Lastly on the FM radio..I guess you can keep it off the list but from what people are saying it is there but disabled :/
First off, thanks for checking for accuracy. This kind of advice helps improve these charts.
The Epic uses a six-axis accelerometer as its gyroscope. While effectively the same thing, other devices are loaded with a dedicated gyroscope (e.g. the iPhone 4’s MEMS gyroscope).
The existence of a MicroUSB to HDMI wire doesn’t make the Epic’s USB port an HDMI port. There are devices that turn the USB ports on computers into storage, cameras, and video cards. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s a still a serial port. If the Epic had an MiniHDMI output jack, it would get a check.
Finally, if it’s disabled by the factory and can’t be enabled without some sort of hack, it gets an “X” on the chart.
I would also like to point out that the TV Output section in the Display settings doesn’t exist on the Epic 4G. It does on the Samsung Captivate and other Galaxy S devices. The component may have been disabled or entirely removed to make room for a 4G radio, keyboard, or something else on this iteration.
I disagree.
HDMI output is HDMI output regardless of connection. Indeed, the specification deals with the protocol for delivery, and not the connection that has been widely adopted to transmit it. The Epic 4G does support HDMI output. Stereo plugs come in many varieties and sizes, but they’re all stereo plugs. This designation is further skewed when you get into digital signals, and as long as the stream is supported this box should be checked.
Not sure if I read your post correctly(Sahas). However, I am understanding that you are talking about a software or firmware acknowledgment directing it to AllShare, by saying display out. I think that the Sprint video mentions that the Samsung Hub or what ever it is called will be on the delivered product. I am also confused (I am not an engineer, I am a retired ole goat who loves gadgets) but mixing the number of contacts from USB Type A or Mini, might not mate with HDMI. In fact, when we set up the new 3D system we had to switch to HDMI 1.4 which is needed, I guess, for the extra information that 3D needs. I think that the 1.4 even has an ethernet contacts. The 1.4 cables we ended up with were 28awg 52.3 GBPS, or some crazy thing like that, which might be a bit much even for USB 3.0. But I really don’t know what I am talking about so hope I am close.
Instead of the big red X next to 4g, you should post this real world test of an iPhone 4 and how slow it is on a 3G network.
I have one….and it’s ridiculous how slow real world 3 G speeds are for the iPhone compared to the speeds of 4G supreme power…..
http://I.pgu.me/Wyz4Nd94_original.png
That’s clearly impressive. Especially the fact that you managed to get your iPhone 4 running on Verizon’s CDMA network when it only has a GSM chip inside. I’ve run those tests on my iPhone 3GS for nearly a year across many states. I never got past 2.5 Mbps download. Wherever you live must be near an AT&T tower with a fairly small number of 3G users.
You have obviously not been introduced to UI customization….or the sarcastic humor it implies. The reason your 3Gs is slower is becAuse the theoretical throughput of 3.x Mbps cellular modem is less than the theoretical throughput of a 7.x Mbps cell modem. Those are the things your ‘Graphic’ should have Included.
In stead of wasting a whole box of crayo s, you could have put some real world screen caps of real capability.
Would you like links to videos of my iPhone executing Flash? And tethering MacBook pro to an iPad via a wifi bridge over 3G for a remote session?
http://Www.YouTube.com/exspyguy
Your digital creation up there is so useless, taking the time to remove it wouldn’t be worth it. Not to mention…..it’s inaccurate.
Hardware buttons and screen gestures cam support the launching of any application or peripheral through Activator. Flash thru a droid port by comex called Frash…..and a toggle to enable or disable it in any browser through sbs settings, mywi serves up a 3G hotspot…with a UI that allows variable broadcast power power slider. There are auto 3G sensors, 3G masks posing as wifi to applications, ios functionality disablers, and enablers…you don’t have any clue what can be done to an iPhone…..or an android phone for that matter.
I have froyo running on my 3G over open iBoot with ios3.1.2. I have nintendo and playstation emulators on my iPhone……he’ll I’ve even run windows 95 on my iPhone.
Didn’t they teach you in tech journal school that….as long as hardware is common….then functionality is only different because of software? Which can be written, ported, retooled and updated for any other platform as long as there is someone who is willing to patch it.
And please….spare me the jailbreak criticism. It’s my pho e and it does what I want with the tools that I provided with.
Android is open and already mot is threatening it’s customers over FW upgrades for Hells sake.
No one is going to make a decision based on your propaganda…there isn’t anything that describes what’s important…User experience under the conditions in which he or she has the ability to operate the device.
Just like you and your slow iPhone…..and me and my slow iPhone….however…one of us has changed his environment to better suit his requirements…and the other one of us loves crayons and likes to giggle at the thought of Pwning Noobs with a picture that holds no resemblance to what a user would want or need.
Here is a tip…why don’t you try asking a prospective customer what they need?
The only thing you referenced looks like the QRG or marketing hand out.
Good luck.
I’ll say the something I say to everyone who rants about being unfair or bias in one way or another. :) I like owning best gadget, I don’t care who makes it. I bought an iPhone 3GS, which was jailbroken for sometime, but then I moved to the HTC EVO 4G. My iPhone was the best device when it was launched and the EVO was the best when I got my hands on it a year later.
Jailbreaking is legal, but it will void warranty (if they find out). I’ve rooted an older Android phone for free tethering, WiFi packet sniffing, etc. Fun stuff.
But here’s the purpose of the infographic: it’s for the average consumer. You have probably written code, taken gizmos apart, etc. You are way above the curve, most people don’t even know how to setup email on their BlackBerry.
These comparisons are important because it shows what’s possible with these phones out of the box. While possibilities are limitless for those who push the limits on modifications like you, it isn’t practical for the average person who buys a phone.
And even those, like me, who like customizing, tweaking, and hacking their gadgets don’t necessarily do it. People simply want reliable and ready technology. Finding time to experiment with custom ROMs and mods isn’t easy.
Also, I didn’t make this, but Ian spent countless hours putting it together. If you can put something that better represents these gadgets and looks fancier, let me know. You may have a job here!
P.S. I’m a Computer Engineering student. I love web development. I unfortunately didn’t get to attend “tech journal school,” but I would suggest taking some English classes. ;)
touche, well played!
My English upgrades are “expected soon”, much like the majority of epics features.
By the way….compass would be better described as ‘magnetometer’
First of all, the two android phones look like big, chunky hunks of plastic with a touchscreen. Secondly, a LOT of those features on the android phones are pointless and shouldn’t have even been mentioned. The fact of the matter is, the Iphone sets the standard for smartphones and droid is just a sorry choice B for those who are to dumb and stubborn to give in. Not only does it beat out the androids in appearence, but it also has 250,000 + apps (not 225,000), unlike any android. Also, have you noticed that every time a new Iphone comes out, controversies like these break out? Every other day that a somewhat different android comes out, no one seems to care. But, when the Iphone comes out, every one with a second class HTC or Motorola android tries to defend their phone, because, really, the Iphone looks better, performs better, is more user freindly, more advanced, and above all isn’t cheaply remade and throne out of the factory every other week.
I normally would not attack someone I feel sorry for, but you crossed the line, calling us dumb and stubborn. Read ON……
Miss Tdb, you are the type of person that bows to the leadership of overbearing, controlling, greedy little men (wasn’t it one of those that started World War II?)I personally would not buy anything from a business man that goes in Public and lies about his product not being defective and then slams other good companies like BB and then fires the guy in his company who told him that his antenna didn’t work properly. You like to pay and pay for Apps so your phone can play CATCH UP with the constantly improving companies who produce 20 to 50 phones a year and not just one. Now what is the name of the App that gives your IP4 the best physical keyboard available on a cell phone? Which App can you buy that gives you 4G speed? What App is for sale that enlarges your screen to be large enough to watch videos in comfort on a plane? You might be surprised to know that your precious IP4 would not even turn on if it didn’t have a processor built by the company that as you put it, “make chunky hunks of plastic”. You do know that the reason that IP4 had to find a new screen instead of running the Super AMOLED is because Samsung is building so many phones they did not have enough screens to sell to Apple and HTC. Why do you think you can’t buy an EVO right now, they are having a screen shortage. Fear not, in 2011 the new Super AMOLED plant will be completed and Samsung can provide more screens. Like for the IP6. Meanwhile, Samsung and Sony are partnered in another screen technology and that will have to do for now. For someone like you, missy, to call people dumb and stubborn for not following suit with a phone that came out, had it 15 minutes of fame and is now rated #4, is ignorant. Perhaps you should spend some of your spare time educating yourself on cell phone news and stop wasting people’s time with you silly little uninformed posts. It is people like you that slow down the progress of the industry by acting dumb and stubborn and now finding out for yourself what is really out there in the cell phone world. I envy you if your hands are small enough that you can type on a virtual keyboard on the little IP4 screen. Some of us have hands that when spreed across the keyboard of a laptop cover every single key, can you see us typing on a little key 10% the size of the width of a pinkie fingernail? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bcryQUuDwM This is you to a tee……..
http://reviews.cnet.com/best-smartphones/ http://www.totalnoid.com/2010/09/15/top-5-smartphones-not-the-iphone-video/
First of all, this is a cell phone. Secondly, I couldn’t get past sentence one before feeling sorry for you because you cared enough to attack me. I’m truely sorry that I called you dumb, bad mistake, bad day, but seriously grow up and stop acting like a child. I honestly cannot stand people who take comments imaturely. I realise your not dumb but please don’t act immature, especialy on the public internet.
Ps. I’m not a “Missy” and my fingers fit fine on the screen. My hand can stretch from a C to an E on the piano(11 keys), and I do live a life that is not based on my cellphone. I also do not bow down to Hitler of Steve Jobs and I find it offencive that you eve mentioned World War 2, especialy when my grandparnets were murdered by the one that you said “I bow down to.”
Apology accepted. Again Sir, if you prefer, I had said my piece and I was finished, but since you continue to embarrass yourself, I feel compelled to respond to your new DOUBLE post. Perhaps you did not read your own post? How mature do you think it sounded? Perhaps you would like to share the facts you based your opinions on while placing your post. I am guessing that you would like me to apologize for having some basic knowledge of the cell phone world? We that discuss these issues try to base our comments on the facts and not gibberish spewing from the keys of a keyboard controlled by a person who is a ‘fanboy’ of a product. However, they don’t know how their product stands among it’s peers. IP4 is a great phone, any phone rated in the top 5 is a great phone. There is no perfect phone and there is no phone that is perfect for everyone’s needs. The “Jitterbug” is great for senior citizens (which I am ) but don’t need to to use one. The new BB 6.0 is structured toward the “on the go” business person. The IP4 is for people who like fun and need an easy phone to use. The IP4 phone is in the category of the rat race: faster, sharper, larger and so on. “I honestly can’t stand people who take comments immaturely” to borrow your phrase. Don’t you think that you are talking about yourself? We do, and BTW “imaturely” is not a word, perhaps you meant “immaturely”. Now where did it say in my post that I accused you of bowing down to Hilter? I thought I made a cute “little man” comparison, who lead sheep over cliffs for their own personal gain. Sorry about your Grandparents, but that was war. It may have been my Grandfather who shoot them, unless they were Jews, in which case it was not. My family served their country, GERMANY, like I serviced the USA when I was in the US ARMY. Quit feeling sorry for yourself and trying to get in the last word. BTW, the word “even” is not spelled “eve” That is your gggggggggggg Great Grandmother by Biblical terms. {Hint, when you type a word and a little red line appears under it, that means you miss spelled the word or there is no such word.} Perhaps you should find a blog about pianos and render your opinions there. We are talking about smart phones and people who know what they are, here on this site. Go away quietly, but please go away. You are jamming up the server.
The piano requires a lot more skill and knowledge than a fancy, suped-up cellphone. I am immature because I am a teenager and still a child and you are immature because you do this crap day in and day out. So why don’t you let me have my say so in this, because I am not stupid, and I’m sorry I gave you the wrong impression in the first place. The only reason I even posted something on this silly website is to see what silly people would put, which on my part is immature. (Sorry for being hypocritical.) I saw what this silly person (you) put, I and my peers had our laugh, and now its time that you shut your fat, Know-it-all, middle-aged (or old, whichever you prefer) mouth beacause I am really, REALLY angry now. Also, the Hitler comment that you made was *IMPLIED*. (Big word, I know.) Oh, and thank you for correcting my gramatical/spelling errors, because I had absolutly NO idea. (Sarcasm, ended.) Also, quit mentioning this stupid, cell phone (Heavenly choir, rejoice!) knowledge that I have absolutly no care for. You, my dear friend, obviously have no life. Yet again, I’m sorry I had to go and be immature and have my say in this.
Ps. I don’t have an iPhone, I was just screwing with you.
The epic is the best phone on the market. I too was skeptical about the look, and wanted an evo but luckily there were none in stock and the sales guy said I was better off with the epic he was right and this little blog only confirms it. The iphone may look nice but cmon, you really got to open your eyes with this one.its a scam, they lure you in with the gimmicks and then it has a ton of bugs that never get fixed, then they turn around and drop the I phone 5 with promises that everything will be fixed but its all bullshit. And don’t give ne1 that shit about at&t having good service. U pay 3 times as much a month and still drop calls wtf
Why’d you two stop? I was enjoying this. Nazis, pianos, name calling. This is better than Maury. Seriously keep it up.
