Almost two weeks into the longest PlayStation Network blackout in history, Sony held a press conference in Tokyo to update the community on the status of the console. At the event, Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President, informed attendees what personal information might have been stolen, what Sony is doing about it, when the PlayStation Network will go back online, and what the “Welcome Back” incentive will be.
First, Kazuo Hirai offered his “deepest and sincerest apologies” for compromising users’ account information. He went on to confirm that personal data was stolen, but a Sony blog post reports that “no evidence [of] credit card data was taken”. However, as we reported earlier, there is still a chance that hackers could have gotten a hold of credit card numbers and expiration dates, which is why it is still advisable to constantly check your billing statements.
In response to the attack, Hirai also explained that they have “implemented a variety of new security measures to provide greater protection of personal information”. Along with firewalls and stronger encryption, Sony created a Chief Information Security Officer position. This individual will be responsible for protecting customer data with the hope that future attacks will not decimate their entire network or endanger player security.
Sony also announced they will begin a slow roll out of its services sometime next week. The roll out will be done region by region with concrete times to be revealed later. In addition to the return of the Network and Qriocity, they will also give a “Welcome Back” gift to customers. This token of appreciation will give all PlayStation 3 users 30 days of PSN Plus for free. This is normally a subscription program providing access to exclusive content including games, demos, and trailers. Sony will also be offering extra exclusive content to those who subscribed to the service before the blackout; however, the company did not elaborate further. Sony will activate the following features next week:
- Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems
-This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games- Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
- Access to account management and password reset
- Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
- PlayStation®Home
- Friends List
- Chat Functionality
However, it is important to note that the PlayStation Store–the app that lets you download content to your console–will not be immediately available. Sony was unable to give a concrete date when users can access the store, but they assured the community all features will be back by the end of May.
It is great to see that Sony has finally gotten things under control and that the Network will return next week. However, I am uneasy about the strength of the updated security measures. Sony needs stronger protection and the press release does outline a long list of updates, but I still wonder how secure the system will be. If hackers chose to invest their time and attack Sony before, who is to say they cannot do it again? Hackers are unrelenting when they have a target in mine. I only hope Sony’s new system is strong enough and will be constantly updated to prevent future downtime. Moreover, the “Welcome Back” gift is a nice but somewhat inadequate especially if the PlayStation Store comes online in later than sooner May. This would only allow a week or so to actually experience what PSN Plus has to offer. What are your thoughts on the free PSN Plus? Is that enough to make up for 2 weeks of down time? Let us know in the comments below.

Would we be able to play games like uncharted 3 online with our ps+ subscription for 1 month? I would love to play it
Unfortunately, Uncharted 3 will be released in November. By that point, the one month subscription will be up.
Well ill have to think of things to do with my ps+ so I don’t waste it.
I agree with jesse!!! A psn card would be a lot more useful than a month of useless playstation plus (especially if store is down)
I am relieved to hear that psn will be back up next week however for such an enormous world leading company in games and all around entertainment something like this is just unacceptable there should have been someone in the position to guard and firewall online networking before ps3 even started what about for the people that pay an annual subscription fee for certain online games such as dcu. Anyway thx for the update but I believe I don’t speak alone when I say something like this is just ridiculous and playstation should do something a little more appreciative to the fact that even though psn has been down for 2 weeks followers will continue to play and support sony. other companies would be bankrupt even boycotted. If anyone else has something to say let’s hear it spreading ur thoughts is the only way our voice can be heard. It is a sign of disrespect and disregard to the ps followers. A slap in the face you pay for something to work all aspects of it no matter if u have a recurring fee or not $400 is a lot to pay for a system that can so easily be demised.
I thinks that a PSN voucher for like,, $20 or sumthing cause then we have a ….better choice of what to do with it and it wont expire u can just use it as you want! :)
FREE STUFF THAT A USER WANTS AS IN I WANT THE NEXT CALL of DUTY MAP PACK FOR FREE
when are we goin to be online?im from the Philippine…thanks
They will begin enabling the PlayStation Network “region by region.” Not all at once. Sony has only said sometime this week so far, we do not have specific dates for any country. Hoping to hear better news too!
I’m already a plus subscriber so I’ve already lost 2 weeks of that service as well as a Free Realms sub, so now this wont work for me at all. maybe if they were a little clearer on what they planned to offer in the way of subscriber compensation but in my experience if they don’t spell it out in advance we’ll never get it
and to add insult to injury, now my SOE subs are down too
no i think it should be like free controllers or new games or something more because wat if the hackers start using peoples credit cards by the hundreds and then wat. we are responsible for that. i dont think so. so i think those gifts are nothing compare to wat the hackers took from everybody. see the xbox 360 console may suck but there server didnt get hack yet so people might just switch over. in fact i got like 4-6 xbox 360 just layin around so if anyone agrees with me, we should start a petition and send it in the psn………………
o.k look JUST APPRICIATE what they give you. When the store is available then get stuff from the plus section. THey have free games dipshits. dont b so greedy
o.k look JUST APPRICIATE what they give you.
I think psn is doing there best, anyone can get hacked when online even the big dogs, I do think the free psn pro should not go in effect until everything is running. But I stand by psn through it all. See everyone on black ops soon.
I find that the free PSN plus would be very good for PSN users including me. It could be a way to say sorry for the time that we hat to wait for. I hope that this hacking thing will never be coming back again. Thank you for the Free (PSN Plus)
I think that PSN should at least give people 1 or 2 free game from Playstation store. I mean full games not demos. that will make people happy. Everyone will accept the delay of PSN Online User.
This is why i stick to the xbox 360……..KARMA LOL……….Free online can only go so far…….
sucks for playstation 3…… just image how bad it would be if xbox was butt haxed….Microsoft would receive so much rage from players.
I feel that the free service is an adequate gift for the down time we have all experienced but feel that we are entitled to more from Sony because of the negligence they showed by allowing our personal information to be stolen so easily and then to wait and tell us about it days after the fact. Maybe a free PSN card or even a free playstation exclusive game certificate would be in order
stop complaing. if you don’t like what you’re getting, switch consoles. if you like it, stay with it. stop your bickering.
