Last week, Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President, held a press conference updating the gaming community on the external intrusion plaguing Sony and its users. After a lengthy apology, Hirai revealed that they would finally restore online services within a week. Eight days later, however, the PSN is still down with little end in sight.
Sony stopped its Network and Qriocity services on April 20th after they discovered their systems were being attacked. Through a series of blog posts, Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications and Social Media, gave day-to-day updates on the growing situation. It was eventually revealed that hackers not only attacked the company’s network but also stole customer data ranging from names to credit card information.
In response to the possibility of endangering millions of PSN users, Sony was forced to shut down and rebuild its entire network. Unfortunately, it is taking a lot longer than previously announced. On April 21st, Seybold said the network would be back up and running within “a full day or two”. However, April 23rd came, and users were still unable to log in. Then, April 30th marked Hirai’s press conference and the announcement that some, but not all, PlayStation Network and Qriocity services would start rolling out region by region. This past Friday, however, Seybold wrote:
“When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system.”
This might be related to the discovery that Sony Online Entertainment was also hacked into, and they want to be sure no other services are in danger. It is also possible that they heard many of your outcries about how foolish it would be to roll out online services and give free PSN Plus accounts without a fully functional store. Or, Seybold is telling the truth; however, a part of me remains doubtful. After all, they already knew that millions of PlayStation user identities are in danger. I can not think of anything more severe. Plus, Seybold claims they are working around the clock to fix the network. If it has taken them twenty days of constant work and they are still unable to strengthen their network security, I seriously worry how long it will take to before PSN users can log back in. Regardless of the reason, Sony’s reputation is in shambles. If they are unable to give a concrete restoration date within the next few days or weeks, they may never recover.

I love it when people bring this up. It was down for 24 hours in the US and Japan. It was down for 18 days in Australia, the same country that planned to ban Halo 3 in the first place. Also it was brought down do to a sudden influx of Gold Accounts being signed up due to the release of Halo 3, not because of an attack on it’s network. Also it’s $60 a year. Let me put that in perspective for you, for one day out of the month, for a year, you spend $5 USD. That means for one day out of every month you can’t buy a Subway Sandwich. So for $5 dollars I don’t have to worry about my very limited personal information being accessed by someone who doesn’t have to see it. If your going to try and talk s**t, learn your facts first.

A lot of folks claim the Xbox is secure. How do they know this? Sorry, i dont use it so I dont know. I’d bet if you had some true visibility into just how they are setup you may second guess your claims on their security. I work with a lot of organizations that claim to be secure, yet after penetration testing the results always tell a different story. Is Xbox advertising how secure they are? IDS and IPS systems? Multiple layers of firewalls, ssl for everything, what are they doing that everyone has so much faith in them. I’d venture to say a lot of people had this blind disbelief sony was secure prior to this attack. I’m not attacking anyone with this, just find it odd a lot of folks point out just cus they pay a subscription their data is safe, if you really want to know look to see if they have to follow any levels of compliance for their data (PCI, SOX, etc) and then ask to see their audit records before making such claims.

Personally I think that Sony is making absolute fools of there self if they are rebuilding there network how can they not know what is going on, and when you make due dates just like in school that is when things should be done! And you should be able to help your consumers before they begin to not think sony is the right choice as I an starting to think now
i will never leave playstation even if psn never comes back up i do enjoy playing online but i can live with out, psn for ever xbag never sony is to big to not get this fixed and they will make it good to all the psn guys

By the time Sony decides to do something every gamer they had will have jumped ship, and with good reason. I personally, will never give Sony another cent of my money. The hackers may have gotten through but it was Sony’s lack of protection, and thus lack of concern for its customer, that led to the PSN failure and breach. And the decision to wait six days in order to try and save face, was not only insulting to the customer, but they should be prosecuted for it. This is just another example of a Corporation looking at the customer as nothing more than a number on an earnings sheet. And now Sony is seeing those earnings drop because people are leaving because they don’t feel safe, and who would? This company had one of the most critical breaches of information in history and they wait six days before they even breathe a word of it. And now they continue to place dates on the return of the PSN so they can keep those gamers that are holding onto hope. They update the customer and gamer once every five or so days and then they have the audacity to show commercials proclaiming the wonderful online play of the PS3, but you can’t play online, thus false advertisement. They claim to be working around the clock and we all can see that statement was nothing but fodder, the same thing that the PSN is now seen as. Sony has shown its true colors and, although a loyal fan of the PS3, I hope that Sony never recovers from this so other corporation will see that if you treat the customer like a commodity, they will leave.ve.

With all due respect – You do not know the details of the PSN attacks. You know what we all know – hackers breached their networks and gained unauthorized access to PCI information.
It is presumptuous at most to declaim that you know what they’re doing or why they’re doing it. It is obvious from your post that you have never worked in the world of digital security. If you think Sony is the only victim then you should investigate the cyber attacks and intrusions against companies such as NASA, FBI, the US Military, the US Department of Defense, Microsoft… the list goes on. All of our major companies have been attacked (especially by China) over the last few years. Sony was unfortunate to be seriously caught off guard.
At the same time – any tech savvy person know that there is no information which was obtained by the ‘hackers’ that isn’t easily obtainable by other means. It is trivial to get a persons billing address. Sony does not have my SSN.
Honestly – the only big deal is not being able to login to the network. As far as all of the media hype – Those ‘hackers’ didn’t get any information that anyone couldn’t get anyway.

yea 25 a week for the system but in order to enjoy live you still have to start a subscription unless they have sum free trial thing going and if thats the case then forget what i said lol. but im not ok’ing the way sony handled it but im definitely not about to jump ship because of what happened. i chose ps3 over xbox cause i honestly feel it is a better system. theres really not anything better that live offers other than cross game chat and honestly thats not big on my wants list. only thing xbox has that i want is the ability to play music in any game they want rather than a game here and there. the reason ppl still support sony through this is because unless you live under a rock you should know anything a hacker wants to hack they can hack given the effort. like joe stated above, the military the pentagon and others including microsoft themselves(hotmail) has been hacked. and if you honestly expect sony’s security to be so much better than what the pentagon and the fbi can put up then you’re and idiot. things get hacked. and you should know that before you go and put your personal information online anyway. when psn comes back up i advise you not to put your real information on there, and use psn cards. simple fix. and anybody who knows anything about the internet is that when using it you can have your information stolen at any point and time. grow up ppl and stop looking at the world with a 12yr olds point of view.
Wow are ppl really that serious about this? I get it I miss online too. But guess what I gamed before there was online with ps1 and ps2.. I know no one wants this up and running more then they do, however it its a service we pay for in one way or another its not a free site no matter what anyone says. Sony is paid a handsome fee from the gaming companies who write their games which we intern pay when we buy their games come on Sony just a bit of info from you customers

yes pc gaming does offer better graphics. but the drawbacks to your method of play is that you are constantly sinking money into your rig to stay up to date with the newer and better games that keep getting released. consoles are built ahead of the curve so that they can go 10years without an upgrade. so yes your games are cheaper thru steam but you more than triple our output by the extra money you spend on your rig to start with and then with the money you have to spend to keep upgrading. its much cheaper and convenient to get a console and get the eagle eye for ps3 and dont know if thats the same thing for xbox but i know they have something similar and just hook your mouse and keyboard to it and play since thats what yall love to holla is important to an fps. point is if you not a ps3 lover then this stuff should not be affecting you or spiking your interests. all of you fanboys are just hilarious. xbox pc and yes you silly ass sony fanboys. grow up guys. everybody has they own preference and i shouldnt have to hear anybody mouth about it because you chose a different gaming method

Yah well with all the PS3/XBOX bickering I thought I might remind yall where real gaming is at. Also you make it sound like you need to be a million air to afford a PC lol. Whats a PS3? $300? add anther 200 and you can get yourself a decent PC and they do last a little longer then you make the out to. Not to mention a good gaming PC can be used for a lot more then just gaming.
I own all 3 systems PS3, XBOX 360 and a gaming PC. XBOX RROD”d multiple times that combined with the extremely low maturity level of its community is now collecting dust in a closet. PS3 I used very little but from time to time would pull it out to play a bit with friends and up tell now I’ve never had any problems with it.
PC gaming just stomps the consoles so much its well worth the $$$$. The ability to upgrade is a bonus not a negative. Massive amounts of free games that are just as good as any block buster titles on consoles. Free updates and content additions. Endless supply user of created mods, maps. Far superior servers run by the community rather then the developer. “built ahead of the curve” you say? Both 360 and PS3 where behind PC’s the day they were released so I don’t understand this statement.

Im really pissed wit playstation rite now I bought my 2nd ps3 had it less then a month and it broke sent it out to get fixed 10 days later I get it back go by a $50 psn card put it on my account didnt spend $1 of it fall asleep wake up and the network is down here we are almost a month later still down and all they want to give us is playatation plus that youll probally need a credit card to even get the plus for free fuck that give me $100 in my account if my money is gone and they dont replace it im goin to x box for sure

I have been a longtime ps user but we don’t need to get into tit for tat bull about which is better. Sony was and is wrong to have left user in this position. They should be ashamed of themselves as it’s a disgrace. As far as paying for service with the xbox, it’s a cheesy amount to pay a year $45 ( with Costco membership) and with that I must admit I have RARELY had a problem playing games online, the same cannot be said for the PS3. The amount of times I’m kicked off is not acceptable and any gamer worth his salt is going to know this. How good of a gamer can you be if you’re constantly on a great level/score etc and you’re kicked off the server? both consoles have their issues, but knowing what I know now if I could choose just one console it would be the Xbox. Graphics etc are all the same and anyone who raves one is better than the other is full of it, you simply get better service online with the xbox. FACT.
