Last week, Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President, held a press conference updating the gaming community on the external intrusion plaguing Sony and its users. After a lengthy apology, Hirai revealed that they would finally restore online services within a week. Eight days later, however, the PSN is still down with little end in sight.
Sony stopped its Network and Qriocity services on April 20th after they discovered their systems were being attacked. Through a series of blog posts, Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications and Social Media, gave day-to-day updates on the growing situation. It was eventually revealed that hackers not only attacked the company’s network but also stole customer data ranging from names to credit card information.
In response to the possibility of endangering millions of PSN users, Sony was forced to shut down and rebuild its entire network. Unfortunately, it is taking a lot longer than previously announced. On April 21st, Seybold said the network would be back up and running within “a full day or two”. However, April 23rd came, and users were still unable to log in. Then, April 30th marked Hirai’s press conference and the announcement that some, but not all, PlayStation Network and Qriocity services would start rolling out region by region. This past Friday, however, Seybold wrote:
“When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system.”
This might be related to the discovery that Sony Online Entertainment was also hacked into, and they want to be sure no other services are in danger. It is also possible that they heard many of your outcries about how foolish it would be to roll out online services and give free PSN Plus accounts without a fully functional store. Or, Seybold is telling the truth; however, a part of me remains doubtful. After all, they already knew that millions of PlayStation user identities are in danger. I can not think of anything more severe. Plus, Seybold claims they are working around the clock to fix the network. If it has taken them twenty days of constant work and they are still unable to strengthen their network security, I seriously worry how long it will take to before PSN users can log back in. Regardless of the reason, Sony’s reputation is in shambles. If they are unable to give a concrete restoration date within the next few days or weeks, they may never recover.

lol iv got both consols, iv got live on the xbox but i never play it!! I still play my ps3, id rather play my ps3 even if it is offline, an i love playing online! Atleast when the network is back up its going to be alot stronger, and have cross chat, thats what i heard anyway, if its true or not we will soon find out! This is crazy sh$t SONY is being crippled right now and I don’t think they will ever recover. If x-box didn’t have a controller that u need an extra thumb to play I would have already jumped ship. But I just got castlevania 2 off eBay for nes I’ll b playing that till psn gets back online I just hope it gets online before I complete the game or else I might have to order castlevania 3 …… This is the truth
When psn finally comes back there will major disruption with online gameplay and downloads. Think about 77 million wanting to play. I bet the hackers are just waiting for sony to flip the switch only for them to bring it back down. These guys are terrorists. Osama bin laden continued after 9/11. These guys are pretty much not gonna stop untill sony is pretty much arse raped. Im a huge ps3 fan but i can see all of us paying for security just like xbox..

I have both an xbox and a ps3, so if the psn will be down for a while I have xbl. I don’t understand when people start console wars. If your a hardcore gamer like me you wouldn’t give a shit. Psn will be back eventually, so for you diehard Sony fans, just be patient.
well i recently bought a ps3 back last month only to learn of this ‘security breach’ after i bought it. im still unable to sign up to PSN
and while I’m not massivley frustrated, it is kinda taking the piss on how long this is taking now. Its been far too long and it shouldnt be taking this long to restore services and strengthen security.
Speaking from a completley unbiased viewpoint (i have owned an XB360 before) I never once had a problem with online play. Sure XB charge for online play, but the service is outstanding. Before I bought my PS3 I had heard from a number of people that the online service was often unsteady or went down etc. Dont get me wrong PS3 is great and Im glad I have one, but online play goes to XB without a doubt
oh and just 2 more things:
1. sony we all appreciate how hard your working to restore the service but please stop giving these stupid ‘it will be back up on …’ dates. when its ready its ready. pushing dates back constantly is a real let down to your clientelle.
2. a message to the ppl that hacked sony… While your probally thinking it was really funny to do such a thing to Sony, dont you know that karmas a bitch. I hope that someone breaks into your home and steals all your things andmore importantly all your personal information just like you did to the 77 million PSN users. Then all 77 million people can laugh at you.

Stupid comment by the writer, how does he know the network security hasn’t been strengthened ITS NOT BACK UP YET. And john have you every tried to rebuild an entire network from the ground up? It usually takes months of planning and then weeks of configuration to even start a network with that many servers, cables, firewalls, software etc. It was big decision to rebuild the network (usually a last resort when things go wrong) and it doesnt matter how big your company is, you can only have so many people working in one data center, not all of sonys thousands of engineers are in there at once, idiot. Besides they only got a few personal details, of which most people can pull off social networks, job sites, fan sites, etc if they really wanted to, as long as you have some common sense you shouldnt be scammed by anything online. All the credit card details were encrypted.

I was an avid /box user and still have many friends that play. for one a fake email address grants you a month free.hmmmm. but towards psn. to think of a due date set on a system that works through millions of people a day seem quite fair that it is late. not like your bridge sky scrapper was completed on the day??? and im optimistic that sony will keep a free psn and with all that has happened security will be as or better the /box. I am also an avid sports fan. why i love ps. xbox needs to catch up on the EA world. but if i jumped of the band wagon on my team. the fact that you can rip a game to your harddrive is still considered stealing if you didnt know. all you have to do is rent a game and save the shit to your hdd. and for the ones who still have to have an official ps3 disc inserted it doesnt even have to be of the game you ripped to your ps3. so if im wrong plz enlighten me as to how its still not stealing?

Sony has been trying to go up but they don’t want to go back up till they secure everyone’s personal data, Thats why there has been post about soon ……….How would you like it if they go up and you keep getting hacked, robbed whatever you want to call it i personal’y think it’s ok till they fix the problem. How would i know if i got hacked or got personal information stolen? Still PSN should only allow PSN cards to be added towards accounts no credit or debit cards to keep this from happening.
