Sony’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a very popular device and has sold a few million units, but when compared to Apple’s iPod, the PSP lacks storage space. Luckily, the PSP has a built in WiFi card to make up for this disadvantage. With a few simple steps, all of which are included in this tutorial, anyone can stream any non-copyright music from their iTunes library to their PSP. To get started, you will need to have the following:
- PSP With Firmware v2.60
- Networked XP Home/Pro Comp.
- WiFi (802.11b) Network Router
- Apple iTunes v6.0.4 Installed
- Songs in iTunes Music Library
- At Least 1 Playlist With Music
The 5-Step Setup Procedure:
1) Download iTunes-PSP-Server.exe and save it to your desktop.
2) Disable any firewalls and/or keep port 8080 open.
3) Launch iTunes and then click on the iTunes-PSP-Server after.
4) In IE/Firefox open the page “http://localhost:8080”
5) Setup is complete if an “iTunes RSS Server” page appeared.
If the iTunes RSS Server page didn’t appear make sure your firewall has authorized “iTunes-PSP-Server.exe” to access the internet completely. You may also want to add a rule into your firewall to keep port 8080 open. The “black box” is the server, DO NOT close it.
Before going any further make sure you know the IP address of the machine running iTunes and the iTunes-PSP-Server. To find you Local Area Network (LAN) IP go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Click on your Network Card -> Support Tab. Your local IP address should look something like this “192.168.1.xxx”. Another method is to go to Start -> Run… -> type “cmd” hit enter -> type “ipconfig” in the window. Your IP Address should be displayed there. Once the 5-Step Procedure is complete and you have found your Local IP Address, proceed to the next step.
The PSP Setup Procedure:
1) Turn on your PSP and go to Network -> Internet Browser.
2) Enter “http://IPADDRESS:8080” into the Address area.
3) When iTunes RSS Server appears add it to your bookmarks.
4) Now click on any orange RSS icon and “Add This Channel”.
5) Close Internet Browser and go to Network -> RSS Channel.
6) Select a playlist you added and YOUR’RE DONE!!!
This tutorial only demonstrated how to access your iTunes Library over a Local Area WiFi network. If you wish to access your iTunes Library music from any “HotSpot” or external location, you will need to forward port 8080 in your router to allow your Local IP to be accessible externally.
Other Notes: To close the iTunes-PSP-Server just select the black window and press CTRL+Shift+C and it should close. If you update your iTunes library once the server has already been started, selected “Reload Library” on the webpage in your PSP browser. The server can only stream non-copyright protected (DRM-Free) MP3 and AAC files. (no video support yet)

Great tutorial!
The Itunes PSP Server isn’t running on my machine tho, it just opens quickly and closes. I have WMC 2005 so I don’t know if this is an issue. I also turned off all virus scan applications and granted the access on my firewall for the server. Any thoughts ?

i get this when i put the address in my psp broser and hit enter communication with the server falied a dns error has occurred(80410414)…does the address have to be caps cuz u cant in the broser cuz it wont let it plzzz respond.thanks justin
When I open the “server” it briefly pops up with an error. I don’t know of any firewalls and I don’t know what port 8080 is (or how to access it). I know iTunes and how to work it the server just won’t work. Please help asap. Thanks in advance.
When they say “IPAddress:8080” they mean replace “IPAddress” with your actual IP Address.
Also, can anyone help me out with port forwarding on a Belkin 54G router?
I think the guy that said “DUDE, I F**KING LOVE YOU! This is AWESOME! :):):)” said it best. ;)
this rocks, but i’m having some problems with the buffering. The songs are skippy and such. Is this just a network problem or something?
Thanks again for the tutorial
i really want to do this but i cant get it to work…
i did everything right, it keeps sayin “communication with the server failed. A DNS erroe has occured. (80410414)”
also why do we need to know our IP adress? do we have to enter it somewhere…
please help
thanks
tried this on my first try worked as easy as it can get thnks alot i have been trying to do this for a long time
do i have 2 leave my home computer on 2 access my itunes on my psp?
uhhh all that just goes right over my head…. that would come in handy, if i actually know what y’all were talking about.
i am new to rss on the psp. if i update my playlist, will the rss channel auto update?
I’ve done everything according to the tutorial, but for some reason after I added the channel, there are no songs. I got to the page where I select my playlist, and I chose one of them. But when I try to connect to my new RSS feed, it says there are no items. Why is this? Everyone else seems to have gotten it to work…
Is there a way to set this as a computer service so it can run in the background and i dont have to look at the command window all of the time?
thx
Ok i am a more experenced web user but for some reason i still can’t get The PSP to see the site. I can get to it fine from my pc’s. I first installed this on my own pc then i tried it directly from my music server. Eitherway i can’t get it to work. I have port forwarding on and all the ports are open. When i tried it on my server i kept getting wide character in print error. It says the error is in the perl file. If i could get to the perl file i might be able to fix it but since it is a executable and that file is not accesable i need another way to get this server working. Is it somthing wrong on my psp?? or is it the computer because it shows up fine via the computer, and via the web since i have a domain name. I just don’t understand why this is doing this.
Thanks in advanced for any help,
Dhruv Bhavsar
Holy. . . this is awesome! :D Only bad thing is that a lot of my newer, more listened to music is DRM’d.
Is there any Linux support, I’d love to put this on my home server and be able to access the content anywhere. :D
Thanks!
Hi:
This is my second post because I wanted to update those interested on how I solved my original problem where I could not get my songs to stream. Turned out that the reason I could not get the songs to list after adding the playlist as an RSS feed was because I was trying to list a song that had DRM. DRM songs will not stream with this program. This works with mp3’s that are not protected!!!!!! After finding a non-protected mp3, I was able to easily reference a song and have it play on my PSP. Didn’t even have to port forward the port to use it within my home. Great program!!!
I got it working perfectly. when paired with something like (http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=Flash_MP3_Player) you get streaming music on the web that is as easy to do as dropping a song into a playlist and starting the iTunes-PSP-Server.
