Sony’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a very popular device and has sold a few million units, but when compared to Apple’s iPod, the PSP lacks storage space. Luckily, the PSP has a built in WiFi card to make up for this disadvantage. With a few simple steps, all of which are included in this tutorial, anyone can stream any non-copyright music from their iTunes library to their PSP. To get started, you will need to have the following:
- PSP With Firmware v2.60
- Networked XP Home/Pro Comp.
- WiFi (802.11b) Network Router
- Apple iTunes v6.0.4 Installed
- Songs in iTunes Music Library
- At Least 1 Playlist With Music
The 5-Step Setup Procedure:
1) Download iTunes-PSP-Server.exe and save it to your desktop.
2) Disable any firewalls and/or keep port 8080 open.
3) Launch iTunes and then click on the iTunes-PSP-Server after.
4) In IE/Firefox open the page “http://localhost:8080”
5) Setup is complete if an “iTunes RSS Server” page appeared.
If the iTunes RSS Server page didn’t appear make sure your firewall has authorized “iTunes-PSP-Server.exe” to access the internet completely. You may also want to add a rule into your firewall to keep port 8080 open. The “black box” is the server, DO NOT close it.
Before going any further make sure you know the IP address of the machine running iTunes and the iTunes-PSP-Server. To find you Local Area Network (LAN) IP go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Click on your Network Card -> Support Tab. Your local IP address should look something like this “192.168.1.xxx”. Another method is to go to Start -> Run… -> type “cmd” hit enter -> type “ipconfig” in the window. Your IP Address should be displayed there. Once the 5-Step Procedure is complete and you have found your Local IP Address, proceed to the next step.
The PSP Setup Procedure:
1) Turn on your PSP and go to Network -> Internet Browser.
2) Enter “http://IPADDRESS:8080” into the Address area.
3) When iTunes RSS Server appears add it to your bookmarks.
4) Now click on any orange RSS icon and “Add This Channel”.
5) Close Internet Browser and go to Network -> RSS Channel.
6) Select a playlist you added and YOUR’RE DONE!!!
This tutorial only demonstrated how to access your iTunes Library over a Local Area WiFi network. If you wish to access your iTunes Library music from any “HotSpot” or external location, you will need to forward port 8080 in your router to allow your Local IP to be accessible externally.
Other Notes: To close the iTunes-PSP-Server just select the black window and press CTRL+Shift+C and it should close. If you update your iTunes library once the server has already been started, selected “Reload Library” on the webpage in your PSP browser. The server can only stream non-copyright protected (DRM-Free) MP3 and AAC files. (no video support yet)

Brilliant. Ive been trying to get this to work ever since RSS came out for PSP – now finally it works and was dead straight forward. THANKYOU! ever so much :-)
Cool program, one question, how do you get this thingy to work with an airport?
thank you Garret – to clarify my earlier post for other people use the url http://(IPaddress):8080 you must insert your own pc’s (running iTunes) IP address where it says IPaddress and all should work – also remember to open the PSP program BEFORE iTunes
“The Connection was refused when attempting to use ‘IP’:8080” HOW THE HECK DO I GET THIS THINK TO WOK!?!?!?!?! i have the latest psp version and itunes version my email is gadgetguy22@yahoo.com
Awsome, love it, now i can save my 2gig for other things. Good work to all who made this one happen.
will this work on Win 2000 pro? my server still run that os…
> I am getting Server Timeouts, Please Help!
If you are getting server timeouts or error messages on the PSP and it works just fine on your PC please do a few tests. First if you have another machine on the same LAN, just type the same IP address into that machine and see if the “iTunes RSS Server” page comes up. If it still doesn’t work from anywhere other than the PC running this your port :8080 might still not be open. Check your winXP firewall as well as any other 3rd party firewalls. If it did work at some point and then stopped, try restarting your machine and trying again, sometimes windows messes up port settings.
> Error 80410414 or other PSP errors?
If the only area you are running into the issue is your PSP try some of the following. Restore Default PSP settings in your PSP and try again. Just for a quick check make sure your PSP can access the web by opening the browser and trying to access any webpage. You also MUST be on the same LAN network, unless you are trying to stream it to places outside your home. If everything works but can’t access the iTunes RSS Server page on the PSP, the problem is most likley with some firewall setting on you PC.
> Wide Character Error.
The current iTunes RSS Server currently has problems with certain characters in song file names. It may not work properly with some symbols or other language characters. Sometimes even if the iTunes RSS Server accepts them, the PSP might not be able to recognize them. Therefore i reccomend, for those having this error, to make sure that your iTunes Library doesn’t have songs with unusual characters.
> Firewall Questions:
if you are having issues with timeouts and not being able to access it on your PSP, try it out once with all firewalls off. (turn of WinXP firewall as well) make sure your PC allows other LAN machines to access your files. Also a quick restart would be helpful.
kk this thing works from my computer as a localhost but when i put in my ip address in my psp with the port it just goes to my routers homepage? can anyone fix this problem?
what is a safe port to change it to? and do i have to have the management thing enabled in order to use the RSS feature.
justin i have you covered on tis issue. Go to advanced on your router or look around for it. You should see somthing called remote management. Click it and change the port as the default remote management port is 8080. I also had to change mine. And if you are not using it then disable it for safety precautions.
Justin a safe port is not really existant. But if you don’t need the option then disable it. THis will NOT effect the psp. But just so u know i used port 8181 since it is just 2 changed digits and easy to remember for me. Also remember if you leave this option on then make sure to change ur router’s default password. Also if your router allows then also change the user name to strengthen security. Just some advice..
Take care justin!!
I get far but when it comes time to use the psp, I get a problem. After entering http://IPAddress:8080 into the Address area in the psp internet browser I get the message “Communication with the server failed..A DNS error has occurred. (80410414)” anyone know what to do?
I have been having alot of trouble with this. I followed the instructions as said to, except I wasn’t sure on how to open port 8080, and the http://localhost:8080 doesn’t open to the RSS Feed page. Any help on how to open port 8080 and help in general would be highly appreciated. Thanks

I’ve finally got it to work and the thing i can only say is…uhum… IT KICK ASS!!….VERY VERY COOL! xD
I Did everything the tutorial said but I still couldn’t get it to work…. now I’m pissed off!!! :(
sry CJ, I’d never
a) set up IIS just in order to stream some music
b) fiddle around /w config files just in order to stream some music
c) create redundant copys of my files just in order to ….
d) .Net just in order to… you must be kidding
instead I prefer
– d/l that 2.5MB sized (free) file, no need to install anything
– I Tunes as the most polished media-player (up to now) is installed anyway
– just start the server, confirm WinXP Security Waring (Yes! Allow) connect to my machine and beginn listening to music in 5m
pls don’t create a Gui or other nonsens not needed in any way.
