As we mentioned last Friday, Skatter Tech was able to get a hold of the brand new Motorola KRZR K1m for Verizon Wireless. The KRZR’s features include a 1.3MP camera, MicroSD, speaker phone, external iPod-like touch-sensitive controls, Bluetooth, and V Cast Music/Video. We had high expectations and hoped that the phone would be as good as it looked, unfortunately we ended up being quite disappointed.
Motorola KRZR K1m Specs:
- Provider: Verizon Wireless (CDMA)
- Form Factor: Clamshell Flip Phone
- Dimensions: 4.05H x 1.73W x 0.67D (inches)
- Weight / Battery Life: 3.6oz / 4hrs30mins
- Digital Camera: 1.3 megapixels
- Storage Space: MicroSD expansion (2GB max)
- Communications: Bluetooth + USB
- Others: Speaker Phone and Music Controls
- Price: $199 with new 2 year contract
KRZR Body – 5/5 stars
The shape of the KRZR is much more comfortable and natural to hold compared the RAZR. The phone is way skinnier than the RAZR, but is slightly thicker and taller. At first glance the phone looks expensive, sleek, slim, and glossy, however just as a PSP or an iPod the, KRZR’s coat is prone to fingerprints from even the slightest touch. Motorola has improvised the keypad dividing them with more natural grooves which helps finding keys, without looking, much easier.
Digital Camera – 2/5 stars
The KRZR’s 1.3 megapixel camera is pretty much the same as the one in the RAZR v3m. Other KRZR models have a 2 megapixel camera, however Verizon’s K1m has been cut down to keep prices low. Motorola has also failed to add a flash to the phone, which although not too powerful often will be handy when taking close up shots in the dark.
Display – 4/5 stars
The internal display is much crisper and brighter than that of the Motorola v3m. However it is extremely delicate and placing even the slightest amount of pressure causes the “ripple effect” in the LCD which may damage the display. The external display is a bit dull and with the fingerprints all over, it may be hard to see in sunlight.
Music Playback – 4/5 stars
Unlike the RAZR, the KRZR supports Mp3 playback as well as WMA and V Cast Music. Verizon’s Media Player is well developed and makes browsing through music easy. Users can view songs by artists, albums, genres, or search just as iPods do. The media player also offers the use of playlists, library shuffle, and even display’s album art. The #1 problem is that users must navigate through many menus before they can get their music started. (Can be annoying for people who plan to listen to music a lot.)
External Controls – 3/5 stars
The addition of external touch-sensitive music controls, which the RAZR lacks, was a good concept, but is flawed. There is no way for a user to start music playback from the external controls, the phone must be opened to do so. The controls are also sometimes too sensitive and the current song may be skipped or paused when the phone is picked up.
Speakers – 4/5 stars
The speaker phone quality is quite clear and has minimal or no static. It sounds more clear and is louder than that of the RAZR, however it is still poorly position on the back of the phone. Both music playback and speakerphone will sound muffled if the phone is in your hand.
MicroSD – 3/5 stars
The KRZR now supports use of up to 2GB MicroSD cards. The space can be used for image, video, and music storage. The card slot is unfortunately placed underneath the battery pack lid making it a hassle to get to. If you don’t have a USB cable and the drivers to sync music back and forth, it will be a pain to remove the card every time to transfer files.
Bluetooth – 5/5
Because Verizon has finally “un-crippled” the Bluetooth, the KRZR can now send phonebook entries, pictures, and other data between devices. When testing the handsfree feature with the Lexus IS250, we found that he KRZR now sends the phone’s signal strength, battery level, and other data to the car’s display, unlike the RAZR.
Overall the KRZR is a decent upgrade from the RAZR v3m. There is however a major lack of innovation. Even so, the KRZR will probably be replacing the current RAZR’s place in the market. If all you need is a phone with basic features that can make calls and looks good, this maybe for you. If you are picky and like customizable feature packed phones, there’s not much that the KRZR can offer. The phone is a bit pricy, currently about $199 with a new 2 year contract or $99 for existing customers eligible for upgrade.

Update: Verizon currently charges about $30 for a USB cable and some drivers, but if you already have the cable and are just looking for the drivers you can get it from the link below. Once installed, your phone will be detected as a portable audio device and you will now be able to sync the music in your Windows Media Player Library with your KRZR. After installing you may need to restart your machine. But once complete you will be able to use your computer to charge your KRZR and sync music. To start, go to Get It Now -> Music -> Sync.
Download: Moto_KRZR_Driver.zip (Note: driver found on developer.motorola.com)
Update: If the driver above doesn’t work, try installing the patch from Verizon’s site.

I loved my phone up until recently,
it vibrates for no reason, and my screen cracked !
Does anyone know how much it would be to replace the screen ?
or would it be cheaper to buy a whole new phone ?
Fragile, buggy, slow. The only good thing is the clear sounding speaker and good looks. I’ve gone through 2 phones now. First one’s earpiece speaker went out so I couldn’t hear people talking to me. The second one was permanently frozen showing only a white screen. I don’t drop/hit/throw my phones. They are just so fragile.
This phone is pretty much garbage. Mine just recently just decided that it would freeze up for about 20-30 seconds, interrupting whatever I do except a phone call, says no service and then goes back to saying it has service; it’s very annoying while trying to send text messages. Front screen cracked very easily also.
I ditto all the above comments. I too was an idiot for getting talked into this p.o.s. The battery only lasts a couple hours, and that’s when I’m not even using it. If I talk for more than 10 minutes, the battery starts beeping. At least three times a week I’m woke up at 4am with the annoying pa-dink sound saying the battery is shot. I go to Verizon and just get the runaround. They say, yeah, the battery power don’t last long. Lemme sell you a new battery. Ya think?? This phone is only a few months old, and I’m stuck with it for another 19 months. Ya live and learn. DON’T GET THIS PHONE! JUNK!
I bought my phone on october 25 from koodo. when I got it the battery was already almost dead they told me this wasnt normal and to take it home and charge it and if i had problems to bring the phone back in, well i charged it when i got home and i found it weird how it charged so fast, well it stayed charged for 3 hours and it wasnt even used. no calls/txts nothing! so i took it back and they gave me a whole new phone. a week later. i bought it bcuz my parents always had motorolla phones and nvr once had a problem with them so i thought it was a good idea. well new battery, and i got the new one two days ago, and ive charged it 3 times since then. does the battery power just suck in these phones. my old phone i even used my mp3 on it for the gym and i charged that once every 3-4 days. so far.. im not impressed! AS well i downloaded a ringtone, and have no clue where it went to in my phone, where it is saved to n where to find it and set it up Can anyone help???
I got this phone in december of 2007 and it is terrible! i am incapable of taking phone calls or making them. I charge my phone all night take it off in the morning and five minutes later it’s beeping low bat!!!! Just today every single button stopped working on my phone and is refusing to even turn on. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!!
I had similiar issues with the battery but Verizon replaced it for free. My wifes does RING weird. The rings are slow then fast, not sure what it the problem is.
Can anyone out there help with the download for saving music to this phone??
Please email to my address bapd108@yahoo.com
i just got mine in Nov and have had two major problems so far. the first time (after one month of use), my phone just suddenly freaked out on me when it started dialing the number 4 repeatedly by itself. i didnt even touch the keypad! i tried to turn the phone off but it wouldnt let me so i had to remove the battery. when i put the battery back in and turned the phone on again after a few minutes, the same thing happened again! so i removed the battery once again and waited some more before turning it back on. later that night, no problems. then last night, while my phone was still on, i opened the flip to try to use it and it froze. i removed the battery and after i turned it back on, it told me to insert the SIM card. it was already in there. so i kept turning it off, turning it back on, removing the SIM card several times and still it tells me the same thing. i’ve had it with this crappy phone! i cant believe i spent so much money on this garbage. don’t buy it!
yea im pissed. my krzr has every-single one of the problems you guys have talked about, the white flashing screen, no time display when closed, memory full issue, it wont keep a charge but i tried the battery in another krzr and it worked fine..yea so the way to fix all of these problems is to take your battery out, hit it with a ballpeen hammer, take your krzr and smash it against a rock, preferebley a sharp rock, and go buy a new phone hope this helped
I bought my krzr on october 23th 08 , and about 2 weeks after i bought it, it fell on grass and the screen smashed.. its junk. now it is febuary 09, and my ringer stopped working for calls, it just vibrates, i call bell and they say theres nothing they can do about it because the screen was broken , even though the ringer worked after it broke, so basically my message is to NOT BUY THIS PHONE , it is a waste of money.
So… Ya. I cant wait to get a new phone. I cant stand this one any more!!! Lets just say, this is my 4th Krzr! And omg!! Each one of them have really really let me down! I love the looks and the size, shoot even the music player and camera work fine for me. Its just the never ending Freezing it does and like i have seen on here, it will freeze for about 30 seconds then go white then have to basically restart itself. Now, for the really fun one: Recently my phone had been 100% worthless. I turn it on and off over and over again, taking the battery out doesn’t help, but the screen is permanently black and the main screen is permanently white… WHY IS THIS!!!?? Grrrr! P.s. DONT BUY THIS JUNK!!
i have a krzr k1m and have had it since dec of 07 and i think it a really ok phone it does what i want it to and it does it well. the speaker is very good and is nice and loud. i also put in a memory card so it now can hold even more than it could. speaking of holding it can also hold allot of msges on it. most of my friends that have different phones say that theirs can only hold 100. but my krzr can hold like 860 its so great. the only bad thing is that if you leave to many msges on it it can reall slow down the phone. another bad thing is that since the top is glass it gets fingerprinty and breaks easily. i should know because i dropped mine and it just kind of shattered. i have had to get another one now. but i soon get to get a new phone.
ok I have read all these coments and i have had all the same problems plus more. the screen, white and frozen, oh and a way to fix that is when the problem starts open and shut you phone over and over again until it comes back., also it vibrates on its own, the ringer stopped for incoming calls, but i have also had where all my messages stop showing who txted me and just showing a little mail box on the top of my screen, the camera rarly even opens, and before the white screen came in my list of problems the screen would go colorful and in different patterns and some times the screen would turn upside down. this is just a small amount of anoying problems with this phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i HATE this phone and i advise nobody to by it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this phone is ok. but it does have a problem of freezing up once in a while. and coverage is pretty bad. i got mine from verizon. but my main problem with the phone is that i cant find a driver that works to transfer songs to it. ive looked everywhere. and i found one that was supposed to work but didnt. and i am big on taking videos but without a memory card you can only record around 8 minutes. but the phone is kinda crappy. but decent looking.
Do not buy this phone. After a month with this phone the battery refused to stay charged and would die after less then and hour. So I bought a new battey and the same thing happened again. Also, it likes to shut off whenever it wants to.
I have a problem with my MOTOKRZR K1m the only button the that works on the phone is the power on/off , every other button is not working. Any suggestions would be great
