Earlier last month, I had a chance to meet with the folks at Skype when they launched their mobile app for Android and BlackBerry smartphones on Verizon Wireless. While the entire announcement was groundbreaking, since it was Skype’s first partnership with a cellular carrier, there were some underlying catches. It turns out that the exclusive partnership limited the availability of the Skype Mobile app to just Verizon Wireless customers. Under this contract, current owners of Android and BlackBerry devices on other carriers can not find the application in the app store at this time. While Skype Mobile is a native app, the service only runs on Verizon Wireless’s 3G network. Fortunately, that’s all about to change.
After a quick email exchange with Skype’s PR team, I learned some interesting details. Although their representative was careful not to disclose any specifics regarding the existing contract between Skype and Verizon Wireless, they did reveal some exclusive details on the availability of the Android App for customers on other carriers along with the future of mobile video chat. When I asked about the possibility of Skype Mobile video chat becoming available for the brand new Sprint HTC EVO 4G, the response was exactly as follows:
Skype envisions a world where video plays a larger role in the way we communicate. The next generation innovation involving video calling will not be bound to the computer. We’re seeing a proliferation of video calling shared between all kinds of connected devices. It’s on computers (today 1/3 of all calls on Skype happen via video), televisions (Skype bringing video calls to living rooms via Panasonic, Samsung & LG partnership), and it will eventually be coming to mobile devices too. We’re betting big on video, and we intend to set the bar on mobile video calling, and it’s something we’re going to do this year.
We will be bringing a direct to consumer app to the Android marketplace later this year. This application will be available for all consumers globally to download regardless of carriers. (i.e. similar to how we offer the iPhone app today)
— Brianna Reynaud, Skype PR
Skype’s bold statement was clear on two things: they will be launching a mobile video calling service as well as a standard Android app this year. That’s not surprising considering that they already offer Skype Mobile for Nokia’s Maemo and Symbian devices plus the WiFi-only version for the Apple iPhone. Unfortunately, the current set of Skype Mobile apps all have tragic restrictions. Even Verizon’s Skype Mobile app doesn’t let customers place domestic VoIP calls using Skype’s $3 per month unlimited calling plan (North America). It only offers free Skype-to-Skype voice calls, instant messaging, and discounted international calling rates. I’m definitely excited to see what Skype’s team has in store for this year given a little more freedom, but I truly hope they take full advantage of the potential provided in the latest generation of smartphone hardware and software.

Update 5/28/10 9:41AM: After a quick phone call from Skype’s PR team early this morning, it looks like they may have pulled the trigger a bit too soon with this comment. According to Reynaud, Skype will definitely be releasing a “direct-to-consumer” Android App this year, however the aren’t completely disclosing whether mobile video calling is an included feature.
Hi! try Nimbuzz it’s got Skype but not video call, I think you can use this software in the mean time for Android.
I have never used skype mobile. just wondering can you vidoecall a laptop/computer or only to other phones?..
Skype Mobile for Verizon’s Android phones works mobile-to-mobile or mobile-to-pc. As long as you are on Skype, you can connect to one another via chat or audio calls. Video is (hopefully) on it’s way by the end of this year.
Verizon’s Android phones? Since when did Android become closed like that. Take your exclusive contracts and shove ’em.
I’m sick of the whole thing. Pissed beyond belief and you have the balls to say…. “Well, our VERIZON android phones can call mobile to mobile or mobile to PC.”
Let’s see if I can explain the hatred…
We COULD video chat to anything we wanted. We COULD video chat to a mobile device or to a PC or even to a Mac… So it EFFING WORKS NOW!
Until Skype got all hairy assed with Fring and pulled it.
It’s OUR toy and you cannot play with it.
BULL! There is no technical reason for it to not be available because …
let me say it nice and clearly…
IT WAS EFFING WORKING FINE UNTIL YOU EFFED WITH IT!!!
PastorVor said all that needs to be said. And said it well. Come on Skype get with the freakin’ program.
wait ok so i just got my htc evo and a skype… and from what i’ve been reading i cant get skype on my evo. but is there anyway..
Just moved over from Canada to Europe. It is somewhat satisfying to see that while North America is technologically behind by a handful o years, progress in Europe is IDENTCAL, just kept artificially on a slow pace thanks to agreements that companies entered. It all boils down to: Do you bend over and change your decision, going for the inferior handset (IP loaded, iTunes, hello) or do you drop you favourite communication software (Skype, that was).
My purchse of an android phone is on hold. Well, dear industry, see this can backfire.
U can use skype IM with the app called Truphone on the Evo
Is it possible to make video calls using app Truphone on the EVO with PC?
Can you make calls using your dataplan with truphone to other skype users?
I’ve been using imo for IM. and i would rated 6.5 out of 10.
I forgot to say…
I’m with Sprint, and i have a Htc Evo.
Well I guess this begins the end to skype being the end all for video and internet chat. I hope he check they got from Verizon was big enough to cover for the fact that millions of mobile customers are now looking to find a skype like substitute… I wonder who made that call? Let’s see.. I almost have the entire video and internet voice chat monopolized… let me just make a fancy move here that will allow another up and coming video chat service to get their foot in the door… lol if I made a mistake like that at my job is get fired. What are we living in? A business world that all of a sudden gives up business to other companies on purpose? How exactly does one expect to survive the dog eat dog business world with obvious flawed moves? If I was one of the many cut throat big businesses out there, this where id make my move…. while the deer has his head turned.
I’m pissed. Its september, not much time left. Hopefully there will be an app for the HTC EVO 4G asap. One of the big selling points for new Andriod phones is the forward facing camera. If we can’t use it to video chat to anybody from phone to computer, what’s the point? Or from Android phone to capable iPhones. Skype is the only plausible medium, unless someone else gets their act together…
The stench of corruption is pungent. The technology is a snip, but it is being withheld. Why?
Skype is now a dirty word around here, the same as the rest of the exploiter carriers.
Ok, I just got the evo in the pretense that I could video chat. So reading this, by accident. I can’t video chat? I thought that was the purpose if the front facing camera. Can u video chat any way? With someone without an evo? With someone with a pc? What’s the point in having this phone? I was also told that you can use the internet while on a phone call. Is this a joke too? Please help me bc I can trade this in, in 30 days. Already the keyboard is freezing up.
U can use the internet while having a phone call only if u have a 4g signal
Also works when on 3G if connected to WiFi
You can video chat with the EVO using Fring and or QIK.
The QIK application is already installed on the EVO and you can obtain the FRING application from the MarketPlace.
I can’t get Skype on my evo. Why is that? I have tried to download it and it doesn’t work.
Its only for Verizon customers….suck it Skype
I bought the EVO under the impression that Skype was available. Are they any other video conferencing programs? F U Skype…you assholes!

Why did you have to go there with the profanity?
I will remember this Skype.
I have Skype on my computer and pay them for a phone number and they latest update is terrible. Since Google now has voice and video, I will be using the going forward and will cease to use Skype … Unless the engineering team at Skype will cease making their software so proprietary.
Ok folks, I think we all know that a Skype type program with an unlimited data program is the answer to connecting the world for little to nothing. The big companies know this & either don’t want to overwhelm their system &/or want more money from us. Either way, it sucks. Somebody solve this problem so that the world & most of the people in it will be at our fingertips.
This is ridiculous. The entire purpose of Android was to have an OPEN system and competitor to iPhone and Apple. To have an Android App–Skype Mobile–ONLY on Verizon is no different than the iPhone ONLY on ATT. To have this App linked to a phone carrier is just bad.
Well, well well… someone FINALLY gets it…

anybody anytime anywhere anydevice anynetwork™
I can’t seem to get the movicha to work. I can see myself I’m the corner of the screen of my phone but the rest is gray.same with the person I am trying to video chat with. Please help.
I know there’s no video but, Google Talk allows free calling anywhere on the planet on the HTC Evo.
I know that this might sound weird, but I got the Desire despite all these “issues”, went to the appstore and thought “Look, Skype! That’s funny.”. Installed it and it worked out of the box. Hm. Wonder what all the fuss is about…Maybe Skype was just released for Android and we can close this dreadful discussion.
Phone HTC Desire, location Denmark, provider 3.
